{"id":11340,"date":"2016-09-17T16:44:17","date_gmt":"2016-09-17T20:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=11340"},"modified":"2020-05-25T13:52:22","modified_gmt":"2020-05-25T17:52:22","slug":"paraguay-and-iguacu-falls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=11340","title":{"rendered":"Paraguay and Iguacu Falls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saturday, September 17, 2016<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This\u00a0morning we rode a public bus\u00a0to Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, the second largest city in the country. \u00a0It is located on the other side of the Friendship Bridge from <em>Foz do Iguacu<\/em>, Brazil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0645.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11341\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0645.jpg\" alt=\"img_0645\" width=\"400\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Despite border control booths near the bridge, there were no patrols or officials monitoring vehicles entering or leaving\u00a0Brazil and Paraguay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0649.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11342\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0649.jpg\" alt=\"img_0649\" width=\"400\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The bus crawled along in heavy traffic and stopped at one point to admit a young man with a guitar. \u00a0He smiled and shook hands with the driver then turned to the passengers and sang a medley of lively songs in Spanish. \u00a0Fun entertainment!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0656.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11343\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0656.jpg\" alt=\"img_0656\" width=\"307\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Cuidad del Este<\/em> is known for its shops and malls so all vendors accept local <em>Guarani<\/em> or any foreign money. \u00a0The shopkeepers quickly perform currency exchanges, so &#8220;buyer beware!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0668.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11344\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0668.jpg\" alt=\"img_0668\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The main street was lined with malls, shopping centers, and outdoor stalls. \u00a0There were corridors of little shops and alleyways filled with open-air booths selling anything and everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0671.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11345\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0671.jpg\" alt=\"img_0671\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16206\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0705.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I noticed every vendor had a thermos filled with <em>&#8220;yerba mate cimarron,&#8221;<\/em> which they poured into smaller vessels and drank through a metal straw. \u00a0In one booth, a woman chopped\u00a0green plants while another woman ground dried plants with a mortar and pestle. \u00a0They put all the plants in a thermos, then added water while the purchaser waited for his fresh &#8216;<em>mate.<\/em>&#8216; \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0669.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11346\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0669.jpg\" alt=\"img_0669\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were\u00a0pedestrian\u00a0bridges to cross the very crowded boulevard:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0689.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11347\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0689.jpg\" alt=\"img_0689\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Heavy traffic returning to Brazil:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0700.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11349\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0700.jpg\" alt=\"img_0700\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After we explored the market, we found a bus stop and returned to the bus terminal in<em> Foz do Iguacu<\/em>. \u00a0Public transportation is free for all seniors over 60 years of age throughout Brazil, so we took advantage of this service and hopped on another bus from the terminal to Iguazu National Park. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0722.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11351\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0722.jpg\" alt=\"img_0722\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The famous waterfalls, <em>&#8220;cataratas&#8221;<\/em> are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and designated as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0745.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11352\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0745.jpg\" alt=\"img_0745\" width=\"400\" height=\"327\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are more than 275 individual cascades on the Iguazu River which created a natural border between Brazil and Argentina. On both sides of the magnificent river, the views were fabulous!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0763.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11353\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0763.jpg\" alt=\"img_0763\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0738.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11354\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0738.jpg\" alt=\"img_0738\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Iguazu Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world!
