\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The sun was slowly breaking out of the clouds so Linda and I decided to take the cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain to see the amazing panorama of Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11405\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1101.jpg\" alt=\"img_1101\" width=\"400\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The enormous city sprawls out between numerous steep mountains, bays, and the Atlantic Ocean. \u00a0Rio is spectacular! \u00a0It is a WOW!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1110.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11406\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1110.jpg\" alt=\"img_1110\" width=\"400\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_0008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full Rio and climb along street wires like our squirrels at home:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1157.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11412\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1157.jpg\" alt=\"img_1157\" width=\"393\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We rode a public bus to the center of the city to the <em>Lapa<\/em> neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1210.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11413\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1210.jpg\" alt=\"img_1210\" width=\"400\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We saw the Carioca Aqueduct also known as the <em>Arcos da Lapa<\/em> which was finished in 1750 to\u00a0bring fresh drinking water to the residents of Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1220.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11414\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1220.jpg\" alt=\"img_1220\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today the structure serves as a tram line which transports passengers between the center of Rio and the Santa Teresa neighborhood on top of a hill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1229.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11415\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1229.jpg\" alt=\"img_1229\" width=\"400\" height=\"317\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked along and turned up a tiny street, <em>Rua Teatonio Regadas<\/em> whose walls were decorated with amazing\u00a0colorful murals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1238.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11416\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1238.jpg\" alt=\"img_1238\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1243.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11417\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1243.jpg\" alt=\"img_1243\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the street was the <em>Escadaria Selaron<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1274.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11418\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1274.jpg\" alt=\"img_1274\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These are the world-famous steps which was the work of Chilean-born artist Jorge Selaron. \u00a0He renovated the dilapidated steps that ran along the front of his house using colorful tiles, ceramics, and mirrors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1328.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11419\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1328.jpg\" alt=\"img_1328\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are 215 steps which are covered in more than 2,000 tiles collect from over 60 countries. \u00a0Tourists come from all over the world to see the magnificent stairs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1266.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11420\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1266.jpg\" alt=\"img_1266\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1270.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11421\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1270.jpg\" alt=\"img_1270\" width=\"322\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the top of the steps\u00a0is the Santa Teresa neighborhood with more magnificent views of the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/IMG_1318.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
