{"id":11432,"date":"2016-09-22T08:29:38","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T12:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=11432"},"modified":"2020-05-25T14:36:29","modified_gmt":"2020-05-25T18:36:29","slug":"corcovado-christo-redentor-and-centro-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=11432","title":{"rendered":"Corcovado, Christo Redentor, and Centro, Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thursday &#8211; \u00a0September 22, 2016<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The sky continued to clear giving us a pleasant spring morning in Rio de Janeiro. \u00a0It was a perfect day to visit\u00a0the enormous\u00a0statue of Christ the Redeemer located on top of <em>Corcovado<\/em> Mountain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1448.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11433\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1448.jpg\" alt=\"img_1448\" width=\"400\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Access to the summit is via a delightful cog railway ride through the <em>Parque Nacional da Tijuca<\/em>. \u00a0The forest is one of the world&#8217;s largest urban tropical rainforests.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1391.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11434\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1391.jpg\" alt=\"img_1391\" width=\"400\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_0079.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11435\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_0079.jpg\" alt=\"img_0079\" width=\"291\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It took 20 minutes to climb to the 2,300 foot granite peak of<em> Corcovado<\/em>, which means <em>&#8220;hunchback&#8221;<\/em> in Portuguese, for magnificent views of the city of Rio.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1454.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11436\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1454.jpg\" alt=\"img_1454\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1423.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11437\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1423.jpg\" alt=\"img_1423\" width=\"263\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As several parakites soared above\u00a0the statue, Linda and I marveled at the impressive concrete <em>Cristo Redentor<\/em> along with hundreds of other tourists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1449.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11438\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1449.jpg\" alt=\"img_1449\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finished in 1931, the statue stands 98 feet tall on top of a 26 ft. pedestal. \u00a0It was created by French sculptor, Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer, Heitor da Silva Costa. Many tourists tired to take selfies with the statue!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1475.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11439\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1475.jpg\" alt=\"img_1475\" width=\"324\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_0067.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11440\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_0067.jpg\" alt=\"img_0067\" width=\"400\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We ate lunch on the terrace under brilliant sunshine with a fabulous view of the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_0077.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11441\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_0077.jpg\" alt=\"img_0077\" width=\"400\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a while, we rode the electric <em>Corcovado<\/em> railway back down the mountain through the tropical rainforest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1485.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11442\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1485.jpg\" alt=\"img_1485\" width=\"398\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We took a taxi to the center of the city to see <em>Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelaria<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1509.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11443\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1509.jpg\" alt=\"img_1509\" width=\"400\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Construction of the Baroque-style Candelaria Church began in 1775. \u00a0In\u00a01877 it was the tallest building in Rio, but today the church is surrounded by tall modern office buildings which comprise the\u00a0financial district, <em>Centro.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1497.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11444\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1497.jpg\" alt=\"img_1497\" width=\"400\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1505.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11445\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1505.jpg\" alt=\"img_1505\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked toward the area\u00a0which was\u00a0the &#8216;2016 Olympic Village&#8217; last month, then we\u00a0explored the outdoor exhibits of the Naval and Oceanographic Museum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1512.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11446\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1512.jpg\" alt=\"img_1512\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1522.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11447\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1522.jpg\" alt=\"img_1522\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1523.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11448\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1523.jpg\" alt=\"img_1523\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We discovered\u00a0the former bank building, the <em>Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil<\/em> which is now a museum and cultural center.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1528.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11449\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1528.jpg\" alt=\"img_1528\" width=\"400\" height=\"309\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We enjoyed a\u00a0free exhibit, &#8216;The Triumph of Color,&#8217; which included several paintings on loan from the Musee d&#8217;Orsay in Paris. \u00a0What fun to see Van Gogh, Matisse, and Gauguin in Rio de Janeiro!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1554.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11450\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1554.jpg\" alt=\"img_1554\" width=\"400\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked through the financial <em>Centro<\/em> district with narrow streets and tall buildings which reminded me of the Wall Street neighborhood in lower Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1543.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11451\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_1543.jpg\" alt=\"img_1543\" width=\"400\" height=\"328\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We passed the famous <em>Confeitaria Colombo<\/em>.
