Today was our first day off the ship. \u00a0I went out to the balcony to see that the ship had docked quietly in the tropical city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Another cruise ship, the Veendam, was docked nearby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8690.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11510\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8690.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_8690\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After breakfast, we boarded a bus to carry us to the &#8220;Old Town.&#8221; \u00a0Our local guide Armando, was a soft-spoken 82 year old former high school teacher who called us <em>Muchachos. \u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Our first stop was the famous seaside boardwalk, the <em>Malecon<\/em>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8724.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11512\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8724.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_8724\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Malecon is lined with ships, restaurants, hotels, and artists selling their wares along the beautiful Banderas Bay. \u00a0The tropical Sierra Madre Mountains rise in the distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8711.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11511\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8711.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_8711\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The next stop on our tour of the city was\u00a0<em>La Inglesia de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Guadalupe<\/em>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8779.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11514\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8779.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_8779\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The cathedral\u00a0tower is topped with a wrought-iron crown &#8220;hoisted by angels&#8221; which was designed to resemble one worn by the Empress Carlota of Mexico in 1864. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8781.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11515\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8781.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_8781\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We avoided countless street vendors and after a while, the bus drove us up the coast and out of Puerto Vallarta. \u00a0Armando said his 104 year old mother still lived in the hills nearby. \u00a0We returned to the Old Town and had a chance to walk around, explore, and take photos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8814.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11516\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8814.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_8814\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We returned to The Island Princess in time for a late lunch and discovered\u00a0that the crew had decorated the ship for Christmas. \u00a0Garlands were hung everywhere, Christmas trees filled empty corners, and holiday music played in all the public places. \u00a0What a great surprise!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8849.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11519\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8849.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_8849\" width=\"400\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8854.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11520\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_8854.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_8854\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Later at night, we enjoyed a tasty dinner in the Bordeaux Dining Room. \u00a0We shared a table with three new couples. \u00a0Two missionaries who had worked in Ecuador, retired teachers from Clearwater Florida (originally from North Carolina), and a quiet couple from Montana. \u00a0Jeff and I both had borscht and chicken pot pies &#8211;
