We had arrived in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua some time during the early hours and the ship dropped anchors off shore. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9092.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11558\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9092.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9092\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I opened the curtains expecting to see a bright sunny day but everything was overcast and gray. \u00a0I stepped out onto the balcony to watch as a tender moved toward the green shore. \u00a0It was raining lightly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9078.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11560\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9078.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9078\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We waited until eleven to take one of the tenders ashore to walk around the horseshoe shaped harbor. \u00a0Vendors lined the main street selling crafts to the tourists. \u00a0There were several local youths dressed in bright red costumes dancing to lively Nicaraguan music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9114.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11561\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9114.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9114\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the hotels on the street is famous because Mark Twain stayed there when he visited Nicaragua. \u00a0It was newly painted in bright whitewash. The bright pink building pictured below is <em>La Cantina<\/em>, a Mexican restaurant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9118.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11565\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9118.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9118\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">San Juan del Sur has a population of about 15,600 people most of whom make a living by fishing or tourism. \u00a0A large statue of the <em>Mirador del Cristo de la Misericordia<\/em>\u00a0stands on a hill above the town. \u00a0It is one of the largest statues of Jesus in the world and is a tourist attraction. \u00a0The woman in the photo below was asking tourists for donations &#8220;to feed her black-face monkeys.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11563\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9130.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9130\" width=\"400\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The small building below is the oldest house in San Juan del Sur and was built in 1912 using &#8220;rustic&#8221; building materials and old methods of construction \u00a0popular a hundred years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9149.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11564\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9149.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9149\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We walked back to the terminal to meet a local guide named, Bismar, and we board a brightly colored bus to visit the city of Rivas, Nicaragua. \u00a0On the way, Besmar told us about the history of Nicaragua, the development of San Juan del Sur during the 1849 &#8220;Gold Rush, the recent political climate, and the current plan to build a canal across Nicaragua by a Chinese company. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9188.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11575\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9188.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9188\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rivas is located between Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean. \u00a0According to a guide, the city is full of Spanish colonial architecture. \u00a0The bus stopped at the cathedral (sorry I don&#8217;t have better photos of the exterior because it was drizzling) and we filed inside. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9166.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11576\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9166.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9166\" width=\"400\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The original church was built in 1607 but has been renovated several times through the centuries. The most striking features of the building were the beautiful wooden ceiling and hand painted dome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9183.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11577\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9183.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9183\" width=\"400\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We drove\u00a0along the shore of Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America. \u00a0There are two islands just off shore which contain active volcanoes, unfortunately visibility was limited. \u00a0We passed miles of wind turbines which successfully provide electricity to the region because of strong winds over the lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9204.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11578\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9204.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9204\" width=\"400\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We stopped at Amayo Farm which is supposed to be owned by\u00a0the niece of\u00a0Violeta Chamorro, the former president of Nicaragua. \u00a0It was a very beautiful tropical property which sloped gently down to the lake. \u00a0There were chickens and livestock outside a rambling lovely house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9217.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11579\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9217.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9217\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our group sat on a large veranda and were treated to soft drinks and fresh fruit. \u00a0We were entertained by musicians and local dancers in bright costumes. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9236.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11580\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9236.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9236\" width=\"400\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9241.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11581\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DSC_9241.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_9241\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We walked down to the volcanic sand beach but it was drizzling and visibility was too poor to see the tops of the volcanoes. \u00a0It was a twenty minute ride back to the ship and we were lucky that heavy rain held off until the end of our tour. \u00a0It was fun to see the towns of Nicaragua and drive through the tropical countryside. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back on the Island Princess we were treated to a jazz performance by Pavlova &amp; Yakeo playing piano and saxophone.
