{"id":11758,"date":"2017-05-23T17:44:47","date_gmt":"2017-05-23T21:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=11758"},"modified":"2017-06-22T17:11:59","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T21:11:59","slug":"chasse-sur-rhone-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=11758","title":{"rendered":"Chasse sur Rhone, France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">May 23, 2017<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I just returned from a wonderful week visiting my cousins in Chasse sur Rhone, France. \u00a0 I flew out of JFK on May 22nd and arrived in Paris the next morning. \u00a0Charles de Gaulle Airport is HUGE and I followed signs, <em>correspondences de vols<\/em>, to successfully find the connecting flight to Lyon. \u00a0An hour later, I landed at Antoine de Saint-Exupery Airport. \u00a0I thought it was very appropriate that the airport was named after the pilot and author of <em>Le Petit Prince <\/em>who was born in Lyon in 1900. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1163.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11759\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My cousins, Claudine and Astrig happily greeted me at the airport and we drove to their house in Chasse sur Rhone. \u00a0Chasse is a small village, located 30 kilometers\u00a0south of Lyon. \u00a0<em>&#8220;Chasse&#8221;<\/em> takes its name from the abundance of game in the forested hills which were used as\u00a0hunting grounds for centuries by French nobility. \u00a0 Now the hills above my cousins&#8217; house have been cleared\u00a0to grow grapes to make the famous French wine of the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0730.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11760\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0730.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Claudine and Astrig are my age and I&#8217;ve corresponded with them since we were young. \u00a0We exchanged transatlantic letters in the &#8220;old days&#8221; but now communicate via email. \u00a0Their father was my grandmother&#8217;s brother; siblings whose parents were killed and the children separated after the 1915 Turkish genocide of 1.5 million Armenians. \u00a0I feel like I&#8217;m\u00a0one of their sisters when we&#8217;re together. \u00a0We laugh, have fun, catch up on family gossip, and enjoy each other&#8217;s company, communicating in a melange of French, English and Armenian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1198.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11761\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One afternoon we stopped by to see their brother, Jo Jo, at his home in a nearby village, St-Genis-Laval. \u00a0Below is a photo of fresh almonds from Claudine and Astrig&#8217;s tree. \u00a0They will be ripe and ready to eat in September<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1359.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11889\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1359.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fresh walnuts also from a huge tree on the property.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1467.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11890\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1467.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We also visited a cousin who ran a flower shop out of their home. \u00a0We all pitched in to make bouquets for the French Mother&#8217;s Day on Sunday, May 28th. \u00a0The family sells flowers in several outdoor markets in Lyon and Vienne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0522.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11766\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_0522.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1188.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11768\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_1188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The last time I saw Claudine and Astrig was in 2010 when we went to Anatolia, eastern Turkey, together to visit the Armenian villages of our parents and grandparents. \u00a0Before that, my cousins visited us in New York in 2000. \u00a0The time between our visits was too long and overdue. \u00a0Now, it was fantastic\u00a0to see my wonderful cousins again!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1213.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11763\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 23, 2017 I just returned from a wonderful week visiting my cousins in Chasse sur Rhone, France. \u00a0 I flew out of JFK on May 22nd and arrived in Paris the next morning. \u00a0Charles de Gaulle Airport is HUGE and I followed signs, correspondences de vols, to successfully find the connecting flight to Lyon.
