France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">May 25, 2017<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lyon, the third largest city in France, is located about 30 kilometers north along the Rhone River from my cousins Claudine and Astrig&#8217;s house. \u00a0Initially developed by the Romans in 43 BC, several sections\u00a0of Lyon are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites because of\u00a0<em>&#8220;exceptional continuity of urban settlement over more than two millennia on a site of great commercial and strategic significance.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0485.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11783\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0485.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lyon is a beautiful city whose architecture reminds me of Paris. \u00a0Both the Rhone and the Saone Rivers meander through Lyon and converge to the south of the historic city center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0487.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11784\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0487.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Astrig, Claudine, and I took the funicular up the steep hill to visit the magnificent basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere. \u00a0It was a fun ride!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0492.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11785\" from the top of Fourviere hill was amazing. \u00a0There is also a Roman amphitheater near the basilica but smaller than the one in Vienne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0515.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11790\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0515.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We rode the funicular back down\u00a0to Vieux Lyon, the old city, and entered the Cathedrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon. \u00a0Construction began in the 12th century on ruins of a 6th century church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0523.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11791\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0523.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0524.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11792\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0524.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Inside the Gothic cathedral was a huge astronomical clock, originally from 1383, and\u00a0was rebuilt in 1661. \u00a0The clock has automated figures which move at various times of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0527.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11793\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0527.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vieux Lyon is protected by the French government as an historically and culturally significant district. \u00a0During the middle ages, silk weavers who had settled in Lyon, built corridors to connect buildings, courtyards, and narrow streets in order to easily\u00a0walk through\u00a0the city. \u00a0Many of these <em>traboules<\/em> still exist and they&#8217;re interesting to see and explore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0537.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11795\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0537.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On this very hot 90-degree day, there were many tourists wandering the lovely ancient streets of Lyon and enjoying the shade of cafes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0541.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11796\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0541.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0547.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11797\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We also visited Auguste and Louis Lumiere&#8217;s beautiful house which is preserved as part of the <em>Institut\u00a0<\/em><i>Lumiere. \u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0594.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11798\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0594.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The brothers were the first filmmakers in history. \u00a0They patented a <em>cinematographe\u00a0<\/em>and had their first private screening of projected motion pictures in 1895.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0565.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11799\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0565.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0558.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11800\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0558.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Lumiere Brothers&#8217; first 50-second silent film taken with their <em>Cinematographe<\/em>, was\u00a0<i>L&#8217;arriv\u00e9e d&#8217;un train en gare de La Ciotat,\u00a0<\/i>the train arriving at the La Ciotat station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0561.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11801\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0561.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <em>Institut\u00a0Lumiere\u00a0<\/em>was a very interesting museum which described and exhibited\u00a0the history of films, movies, and cameras. \u00a0Highly recommended! \u00a0There was also a theater on site which shows current movies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the way back to Chasse-sur-Rhone, we passed the historic building of <em>le\u00a0hotel de ville, <\/em>the\u00a0city hall of Lyon:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0598.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11802\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0598.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We also stopped at the memorial in Lyon to honor the <em>&#8220;1.5 million Armenians who were exterminated as victims of the first genocide of the 20th century by the &#8220;Young Turk&#8221; government: 1915 &#8211; 1916.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<em>&#8220;In the memory of the victims of all genocides and crimes against humanity.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0601.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11803\"
