<\/em>one of the most beautiful villages of the world<em>.<\/em>\u00a0 Located about 25 miles northeast of Lyon, Perouges is a 12th century gem preserved by the French government and restored to its medieval glory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0641.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11844\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0641.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The village is a main tourist destination and is usually very crowded, but because today is Monday and French shops are closed, Perouges was deserted. \u00a0We had the entire town to ourselves and my cousins and I enjoyed walking along quiet, empty cobblestone streets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0703.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11845\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0703.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0670.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11846\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0670.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The village has two main entrances: <em>Porte d&#8217;en Bas<\/em> &#8211; the bottom gate and <em>Porte d&#8217;en Haut<\/em> &#8211; the upper door. \u00a0Once through the ancient gates, we were magically transported to the Middle-Ages. \u00a0Narrow cobblestone paths weave through towering rock walls of medieval buildings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0710.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11847\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0710.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0655.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11849\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0655.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The stone\u00a0paths are intertwined in a labyrinth of little streets between houses. \u00a0It was fun to walk along and finally end up where we began!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0645.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11848\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0645.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The main square is the site of a majestic linden tree which was planted during the French Revolution and is known as <em>La Place du Tilleul.\u00a0<\/em>The medieval walled city was originally inhabited by weavers and farmers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0653.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11850\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0653.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0696.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11851\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0696.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Claudine, Astrig, and I explored all the cobblestone paths and alleyways in the village. \u00a0We stopped at one of the shops to try <em>Galette Perougienne, <\/em>which is\u00a0a speciality only made in Perouges. \u00a0The sweet pizza-like tart is made with sugar, butter, and lime zest baked on flat brioche dough. \u00a0Of course, it was delicious!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0713.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11856\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0713.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0716.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11857\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC_0716.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Le\u00a0Moyen Age<\/em> cat sleeping on the horizontal window shutter,<em> le\u00a0volet,<\/em> never stirred when I took his picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0700.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11852\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DSC_0700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"309\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Perouges has several restaurants, gift stores, artisan craft shops, a bakery, and a wine shop which cater to tourists. It&#8217;s an exceptionally lovely medieval village and a wonderful rare treat\u00a0to visit without crowds of tourists.
