Rotterdam. \u00a0I slept very well despite the ship\u2019s fog horn blaring intermittently through the night. \u00a0When the purring engines stopped this morning at seven o\u2019clock, the stillness woke me up. \u00a0We had docked alongside the harbor in Sydney, Nova Scotia. \u00a0It was a bright gray day with a soft breeze blowing &#8211; 66 degrees F. \u00a0We&#8217;ve traveled 678 nautical miles from Boston.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0981.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_0981-2.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0981\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sidney, Nova Scotia is located on the easternmost tip of Cape Breton Island off the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. \u00a0It boasts a rich history of Gaelic heritage and British Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution. \u00a0The Scottish-born inventor, Alexander Graham Bell, lived and worked here. \u00a0His house and museum are impressive and fun to visit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1079.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1079.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1079\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At eight o\u2019clock an announcement stated the gangways were in place and people could disembark. \u00a0Jeff and I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the Lido Cafe. \u00a0We took our time leaving the ship because we had planned to walk around and explore on our own. \u00a0Sydney is a small town with a few historical sights near the cruise port. \u00a0I stuffed my daypack with a rain jacket and umbrella (just in case), Off insect spray &amp; wipes (someone mentioned black flies), a \u201chead net\u201d (another black fly deterrent), and my camera.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0998.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_0998-1.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0998\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I walked down the gangplank, I heard bagpipe music. \u00a0Passengers were greeted by a bagpipe player fully dressed in formal Scottish attire, playing tunes. \u00a0A giant 30 foot fiddle, known as Fidheal Mhor A\u2019Ceilidh, was built near the cruise terminal to commemorate the unique musical heritage of Cape Breton. \u00a0It\u2019s a local tradition to have your photo taken in front of the fiddle. \u00a0A Tall Ships Festival was being held this weekend and several historic sailing vessels were in port.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1005.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1005-1.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1005\" width=\"254\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We walked up the hill to St. Patrick\u2019s Church and Museum, the oldest Roman Catholic church in eastern Nova Scotia. It was a small stone white-washed building with an array of tombstones out back. Inside there were folding chairs and cabinets with historical artifacts. \u00a0An older man sitting on a raised platform played a guitar and sang sea chanties and lovely folk songs. He had a lovely voice which echoed across the stone room of the former church.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1015.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1015-1.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1015\" width=\"400\" height=\"317\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well maintained colonial wooden houses overlook the harbor. \u00a0We continued walking to the Jost Heritage House Museum built in the 1780s. \u00a0A youthful costumed guide gave an informative tour and talked about life in Sydney during the past two hundred years. \u00a0A family lived in the house until 1991 when it was given to the city of Sydney to become a museum. \u00a0Historical tool and artifacts were donated to the museum and the original kitchen was uncovered in the basement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1021.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1021-1.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1021\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1033.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1033-1.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1033\" width=\"282\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Across the tree-lined street was the Cossit House built in 1787. \u00a0The young woman dressed in a colonial costume who greeted us at the door immediately began to tell us about her passionate interest in finance and the NY Stock Market. There was another young woman in the colonial kitchen telling the story of the family who lived in the house.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1046.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1046.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1046\" width=\"400\" height=\"303\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1048.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1048.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1048\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1053.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1053.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1053\" width=\"263\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1054.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1054.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1054\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Down the street was St. George\u2019s Anglican Church which is the oldest building in Sydney. \u00a0Several volunteers told tourists the history of the church but we didn\u2019t stay to hear stories. \u00a0We were enticed by a sign pointing to a \u201cCraft Sale\u201d behind St. George\u2019s. \u00a0On the next street we noticed loud music and many people with Rainbow flags and banners. \u00a0As we watched, two local vendors from the craft market began to talk to us and we learned that the people were preparing for the Annual Gay Pride Parade which was planned to start soon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1059.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1059.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1059\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We walked back to the main street which was closed to traffic and decorated for a festival. \u00a0Each intersection was painted with large swatches of Rainbow colors, vendors had set up tables to sell crafts, and several food trucks had long lines of people waiting to buy snacks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1071.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1071.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1071\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1064.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1064.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1064\" width=\"229\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Families, men, women, children, and crowds of people lined the parade route. \u00a0Many wore rainbow face paint or colorful outfits and carried balloons and banners. \u00a0It was a lively celebration!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1083.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1083.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1083\" width=\"400\" height=\"180\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, we returned to the cruise terminal. \u00a0We had heard about the free wifi available in the building on the dock. \u00a0We entered to find a couple hundred people quietly sitting and staring at their mobile devices. \u00a0I guess I wasn\u2019t the only cruiser suffering from wifi depravation! \u00a0I joined my fellow passengers and crew members and sent emails to my family. \u00a0I miss communicating with everyone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1084.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1084.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1084\" width=\"307\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We went up to the highest deck to watch the Rotterdam slowly pull away from the dock at five o\u2019clock. \u00a0In a few minutes the ship was in the channel and chugging out into open waters.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the evening, Jeff and I went to dinner in the dining room. \u00a0We were willing to share a table and sat with four people who had homes in Florida. \u00a0Dan and George lived in Tampa year round when they weren\u2019t sailing on some cruise ship. \u00a0Dan logged 207 days on cruise ships this \u00a0past year. \u00a0 Linda and Bill spent summers in New Jersey and winters in Delray Beach when they\u2019re not cruising. \u00a0Holland America has a star merit system which awards frequent sailers. \u00a0We learned there are 400 Five Star Cruisers and 500 Four Star Cruisers aboard this ship for the Voyage of the Vikings. \u00a0That\u2019s a lot of frequent cruisers on a ship with 1,400 people!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1076.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1076.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1076\" width=\"399\" height=\"337\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday &#8211; August 5, 2017 The moon was barely visible last night as dense fog enveloped the M.S.
