{"id":12022,"date":"2017-08-09T16:58:23","date_gmt":"2017-08-09T20:58:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=12022"},"modified":"2017-11-27T18:43:26","modified_gmt":"2017-11-27T23:43:26","slug":"qaqortoq-greenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=12022","title":{"rendered":"Qaqortoq, Greenland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday &#8211; August 9, 2017<\/p>\n<p>Never in a million years did I think I would ever get to Greenland! \u00a0It wasn\u2019t even on my bucket list. \u00a0I didn\u2019t know there were towns there or people living in those towns. \u00a0The ship made its way between the rocky islands in a heavy fog all night and we arrived off the coast of Greenland this morning. \u00a0Unbelievable!<\/p>\n<p>We looked out to see icebergs floating offshore near the ship. \u00a0I wondered if icebergs appear on radar in the bridge. \u00a0People said that 75% of the iceberg is below the surface of the water. \u00a0The wind was calm and the air temperature was 43 degrees. \u00a0Best of all, it wasn\u2019t raining!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1211.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1211.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1211\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Rotterdam anchored just outside the town of Qaqortoq, population 3500, and lowered the tenders. \u00a0The town was built along the shoreline and brightly painted houses dot the rocky coast above the harbor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1220.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1220.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1220\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We took a tender into town and explored Qaqortoq. \u00a0Believe it or not, there was a lot to see:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_1799.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1799.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 1799\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1241.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1241.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1241\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a photo of the only fountain in Greenland. And it was turned on!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1267.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1267.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1267\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lutheran Church, the Frelserens Kirke was built in 1832.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1295.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1295.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1295\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We enjoyed a good cup of coffee in a cafe with free wifi. \u00a0After a while two musicians arrived and began to play and sing. \u00a0I\u2019m not sure whether they sang in Danish or the native Greenland language.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1343.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1343.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1343\" width=\"400\" height=\"339\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1307.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1307.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1307\" width=\"400\" height=\"278\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bright blue building was a supermarket. \u00a0We went in to see what was available. \u00a0Everything has to be brought in by ship, so food is expensive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1311.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1311.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1311\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1319.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1319.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1319\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Several local people came down to the harbor to see all the strangers from the ship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1349.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1349.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1349\" width=\"399\" height=\"305\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1243.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1243.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1243\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1350.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1350.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1350\" width=\"400\" height=\"241\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Gallivanting Grandma in Qaqortoq, Greenland:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1374.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1374.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1374\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Several years ago, artists were invited to go to Qaqortoq to be inspired by the surroundings and create in natural places. \u00a0There are 30 incredible pieces of art all over the town.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1382.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1382.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1382\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we rode away from the town on the tender, I saw snow on nearby mountains. \u00a0Greenland is solid granite rock with jagged mountains, no trees, some wild flowers, and moss. \u00a0It\u2019s a harsh rugged landscape.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_1396.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1396.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 1396\" width=\"400\" height=\"287\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had an amazing time in Qaqortoq and I was very happy to have visited the town and have a small look at Greenland culture. \u00a0We returned to the ship to take a break before going to a six o\u2019clock magic show performed by Marc Oberon. \u00a0He had won a championship in \u2018close up\u2019 magic and he was very good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday &#8211; August 9, 2017 Never in a million years did I think I would ever get to Greenland!
