{"id":12111,"date":"2017-08-14T17:09:05","date_gmt":"2017-08-14T21:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=12111"},"modified":"2017-11-27T18:49:59","modified_gmt":"2017-11-27T23:49:59","slug":"a-day-at-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=12111","title":{"rendered":"A Day at Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday &#8211; August 14, 2017<\/p>\n<p>At 8:00 AM the temperature was 48 degrees with a 14 knot wind (4 on the Beaufort Scale) We\u2019ve traveled 2858 nautical miles since Boston.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re heading East to Norway. \u00a0We had a great time in Reykjavik, Iceland. \u00a0It was a fantastic city and interesting country and we\u2019d like to return on our own some day! \u00a0Maybe drive around the \u201cRing Road\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Today was another Sea Day and I didn\u2019t take any pictures. \u00a0We checked the ship\u2019s schedule to see what\u2019s available to do. \u00a0Most of the choices didn\u2019t appeal to us, for example Ping Pong Tournament, Beer Tasting, Tennis, Jackpot Bingo, Dutch Shuffle Board, etc.<\/p>\n<p>We were interested in two of the lectures. \u00a0In the morning, we heard John Nixon talk about \u201cThe Work of the Marine Salvor: Shipwrecks,Disaster &amp; Salvage.\u201d \u00a0I thought this was a surprising topic to present to passengers while cruising on a ship! \u00a0He had worked for an international salvage company and he related his experiences as a Salvage Consultant. \u00a0He talked about the types and causes of casualties: \u00a0structural failures, grounding &amp; stranding, stability &amp; capsize, flooding &amp; listing, and human error. \u00a0He spoke mainly about commercial vessels which were shipwrecked during the last fifty years, so the topic seemed remote to us sitting comfortably in the theater as the ship gently rolled back and forth. \u00a0Captain Nixon had photographs of all the disasters he spoke about and his lecture was very interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the afternoon we also heard Location Guide Barbara take about our next two ports: Bergen and Eidfjord, Norway. \u00a0I always enjoy travel photos and her talk was enjoyable. \u00a0Jeff and I visited Bergen a number of years ago and loved it so we&#8217;re looking forward to seeing the city again. \u00a0Eidfjord is one of Norway\u2019s famous fjords and it looked beautiful in Barbara\u2019s pictures. \u00a0I hope it\u2019s not raining when we cruise there!<\/p>\n<p>Tonight was another dress up &#8211; Gala Night. \u00a0We wanted to eat in the dining room so we wore our dressiest outfits and shared a table with two other couples. \u00a0David and Henry were from Seattle, Washington and Linda and Hank from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. \u00a0We had good conversation and a pleasant evening. \u00a0We\u2019ve been lucky so far!<\/p>\n<p>The weather was lovely all day: bright and sunny with some clouds. \u00a0The sea was relatively calm with just a few white caps later in the afternoon. \u00a0At 11:00 PM the temperature was 52 degrees; \u00a0we&#8217;re sailing directly into the wind with 17 knots of wind from the east; \u00a0we\u2019ve traveled 3095 nautical miles so far.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monday &#8211; August 14, 2017 At 8:00 AM the temperature was 48 degrees with a 14 knot wind (4 on the Beaufort Scale) We\u2019ve traveled 2858 nautical miles since Boston.
