\u00a0Walking around the ship was challenging and I had to hold on to the handrails. \u00a0Winds were blowing and the waves were high as the ship shuddered and shook and rolled and pitched. \u00a0I fell asleep although it felt like I was lying in a hammock swaying back and forth. \u00a0The Rotterdam left the squall out in the Atlantic eventually and we cruised into the calm waters off Alesund, Norway.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2067.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2067.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2067\" width=\"400\" height=\"236\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At seven o\u2019clock,\u00a0the sun was bright and the wind was calm. \u00a0The ship slowly approached the dock in the center of the picturesque city of Alesund. \u00a0After an early breakfast, we walked down the gangway and into Alesund. \u00a0The city is famous for a fire which broke out in 1904. \u00a0It ravaged the city, a number people tragically died, and thousands lost everything and were homeless. \u00a0Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany helped rebuild Alesund and he is honored here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2075.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2075.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2075\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alesund recovered and the people rebuilt their city in an Art Nouveau style which can be seen today. \u00a0Because most of the buildings were rebuilt between 1905 and 1919, the architecture of the town is similar. \u00a0We were up and out walking around Alesund very early in the morning before the shops opened and the streets were empty.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2140.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2140.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2140\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2141.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2141.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2141\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later in the early afternoon, we decided to take a tourist bus up to the observation deck. \u00a0It was too far for us to walk so we rode a little tourist bus up to the top of the mountain overlooking Alesund. \u00a0The city is built on two connected islands which formed a peninsula.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2161.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2161.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2161\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the observation deck on the mountain in the photo below. \u00a0It was fun to take the tiny bus. \u00a0Otherwise, it\u2019s a long walk up to the top including 419 steps.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2196.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2196.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2196\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The coast of Norway is dotted with thousands of islands. \u00a0Some of the islands have small houses carved into the mountainous rocks and other islands seem to be uninhabited. \u00a0Nonetheless, Norway is a very beautiful country.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2202.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2202.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2202\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday &#8211; August 16, 2017 It was a rough ride last night!!
