Eidfjord"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday &#8211; August 18, 2017<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2445.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2445.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2445\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We left Bergen, Norway and cruised inland to the Hardangerfjord. \u00a0This is one of the famous and most beautiful fjords of Norway. \u00a0We arrived at the beginning of the fjord at daybreak. \u00a0Clouds clung to the high mountains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2456-2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2456-2.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2456 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We went out to the front of the ship to watch it slowly progress through the fjord while the sun rose higher in the sky. \u00a0We passed under the bridge which connects the road from Oslo to Bergen. \u00a0The bridge had not been built when Jeff and I drove around Norway in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2480-2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2480-2.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2480 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Eidfjord means the end of the fjord in Norwegian, and is the name of the tiny village at the end of the Hardangerfjord. \u00a0The Rotterdam had to anchor off the harbor because a Viking cruise ship was tied to the main dock. \u00a0It was so big it dwarfed the town.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2509.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2509.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2509\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2525-2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2525-2.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2525 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We took a tender into Eidfjord and walked around the lovely town. \u00a0There are a few small shops, cafes, restaurants, and a grocery store. \u00a0A small hotel sits at the main dock.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2574-2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2574-2.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2574 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2533.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2533.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2533\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had signed up for an excursion in the afternoon so we met the tour group at about one o\u2019clock. \u00a0We took a bus out of Eidfjord and climbed up the mountain and went up into the interior of Norway beyond the fjord.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2630-2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2630-2.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2630 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2616.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2616.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2616\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then the bus took us to an amazing dam: the Sysendammen which was built entirely of rocks and stones. \u00a0No concrete was used in the construction of the dam, according to our guide. \u00a0Her name was Pilar and she was an immigrant to Norway from Spain.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2665.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2665.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2665\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beyond the dam we could see a huge glacier. \u00a0The guide told me that she just saw the bus driver taking pictures of the dam and glacier for the first time. \u00a0She said he has been taking tours to this location for about ten years and has seen it thousands of times, but this was the clearest and best view of the glacier. \u00a0&#8220;It was usually raining or totally overcast and impossible to see anything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2662-2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2662-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2662 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>View of the scenery between the fjord and the dam:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2699.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2699.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2699\" width=\"400\" height=\"227\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2693.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2693.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2693\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The air was crisp and cool but the temperature felt warm and sunny. \u00a0Pilar spoke about hiking and camping in this treeless region.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2704-2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_2704-2.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2704 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was getting late and we had an hour-long ride back to Eidfjord and the ship. \u00a0The terrain of Norway is rugged and weathered but very beautiful and awe-inspiring. \u00a0I took a few photos out of the bus window:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block;
