August 29, 2017<\/p>\n<p>We cruised away from Djupivogur last night and into fog and rain. \u00a0The ship traveled northward for several hours then turned west along the vast northern coast of Iceland. \u00a0The Rotterdam crossed the Arctic Circle in the middle of the night to arrive in Akureyri at 8:00 AM.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_2103.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2103.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 2103\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My alarm woke me abruptly at six this morning because we had a long excursion which would take us into the interior of Iceland. \u00a0I looked out of our window and saw only dense fog and rain. \u00a0It was 46 degrees. \u00a0I dressed in layers and made sure I had my umbrella and waterproof shoes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_2109.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2109.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 2109\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ship moved slowly down the Eyjafjordur, the longest fjord in Iceland, to dock in Akureyri at the end of the fjord. \u00a0Akureyri is the capital city of the north and the second largest city in Iceland after Reykjavik.<\/p>\n<p>View of the countryside from the bus. \u00a0Icelandic horses are a special breed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_2120.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2120.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 2120\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We joined 200 other passengers in the theater to board buses to go on an excursion called Jewels of the North. \u00a0We drove through the city of Akureyri and crossed to the other side of the fjord as the guide, Machina, told us about Iceland.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_2129.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2129.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 2129\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We drove along the fjord and across a mountain pass and the Fnjoskadalur Valley. \u00a0The weather was gray and overcast. \u00a0Low clouds hung over the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>The bus drove around Lake Myvatn, a popular vacation spot for Icelanders. \u00a0The terrain is incredible, miles of lava fields and dormant volcanoes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_2138.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2138.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 2138\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_2149.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2149.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 2149\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The river cut its way through the lava fields:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4132.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4132.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4132\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was the spectacular Godtafoss waterfalls which means the &#8220;waterfall of the Gods.\u201d \u00a0Machina explained the name comes from the last pagan king of Iceland who threw statues of pagan Gods into the waterfall to show that he adopted Christianity. \u00a0We walked out to the falls to take pictures. \u00a0The rain subsided a bit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4143.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4143.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4143\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4155.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4155.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4155\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next stop was the geothermal field of Namaskard to see the bubbling pools of hot water and purple and yellow sulfur. \u00a0Steam hissed out of the ground and made an eery sound. \u00a0The smell was awful!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4198.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4198.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4198\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4217.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4217.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4217\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bus drove around Myvatn Lake to Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth. \u00a0Circular paths twisted around towering lava formations and caves. \u00a0They were formed after the eruption of a volcano 2000 years ago. \u00a0There are folk tales about trolls and other mythical creatures who live among the lava formations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4231.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4231.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4231\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4235.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4235.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4235\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had tomato soup and salmon for lunch at the Sel-Hotel Myvatn. \u00a0We walked across the road and looked at the pseudo-craters of Skutustadagigar. \u00a0These were formed by steam explosions when burning lava encounters wetlands.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4261.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4261.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4261\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4268.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4268.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4268\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The weather cleared on our ride back to Akureyri. The Icelandic terrain is open and vast and very impressive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4288.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4288.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4288\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We returned in enough time to explore the city of Akureyri. \u00a0We walked up to the center of town and took pictures and did a little shopping.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4324.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4324.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4324\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4342.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4342.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4342\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4345.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4345.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4345\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4337.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4337.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4337\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ship left the dock promptly at five o\u2019clock and slowly progressed along the beautiful Eyjafjordur fjord and out into the Icelandic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4353.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4353.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4353\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We went up to the Crow\u2019s Nest in the bow of the ship to look out at the fjord as the sun faded. \u00a0There were many others there with the same idea. \u00a0Someone mentioned whales and when we looked out, we saw intermittent spurts of \u201csteam\u201d coming out of the water. \u00a0There must have been several pods of whales in the fjord and it was exciting to look out in anticipation of seeing a whale. \u00a0We just saw spurts of spray emanating from the inky water and an occasional break on the surface, but exciting nonetheless. \u00a0The northern coast of Iceland:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4355.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_4355.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4355\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday &#8211; August 29, 2017 We cruised away from Djupivogur last night and into fog and rain. \u00a0The ship traveled northward for several hours then turned west along the vast northern coast of Iceland. \u00a0The Rotterdam crossed the Arctic Circle in the middle of the night to arrive in Akureyri at 8:00 AM.
