Rotterdam is on its way to Boston and the end of our fabulous cruise! \u00a0It\u2019s appropriate that our last day is a glorious glad-to-be-alive sunny day. \u00a0Thirty-seven days ago, on August 2nd, we set out from Boston on the Holland America Line\u2019s flagship MS Rotterdam to cruise the North Atlantic Ocean and return. \u00a0We\u2019ll be in Boston Harbor later today.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14220\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/VikingMap-e1536070576158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This cruise was the &#8220;Voyage of the Vikings.&#8221; \u00a0The map above shows the major ports of call where we stopped to explore. \u00a0The first leg of the journey was from Boston to Rotterdam, the Netherlands. \u00a0On the return trip we stopped in several different ports. \u00a0The most exciting places to visit were two towns in Greenland and four cities in Iceland. \u00a0Because of good weather, we were able to cruise beautiful Prince Christian Sound, Greenland twice!<\/p>\n<p>The only port the ship couldn\u2019t get into was Halifax, Nova Scotia yesterday, because of high gale force winds. \u00a0Captain van der Wal tried but 50 mph winds were pushing the ship broadside into the dock and even with the help of two tugboats, the captain felt it was a dangerous situation. \u00a0So, he cancelled Halifax and steered the ship back out into the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>All day yesterday, we cruised on rough seas and gale force winds as the Rotterdam slowly moved westward toward Boston and home. \u00a0We were \u201cat sea\u201d for three days, since we left St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland. \u00a0Castaways on the Atlantic\u2026. \u00a0:-)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0747.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_0747.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0747\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We arrived in beautiful Boston harbor about six o\u2019clock at night and ended this journey as it began, with a quiet evening watching the sun set over the city of Boston. \u00a0It&#8217;s 55 degrees with a gentle breeze of 6 knots &#8211; 3 on the Beaufort scale.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, Saturday &#8211; September 9th &#8211; we\u2019ll disembark, drive home, and return to our normal landlubber-lives. The M.S.
