{"id":12464,"date":"2017-09-27T17:03:04","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T21:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=12464"},"modified":"2018-04-21T09:51:47","modified_gmt":"2018-04-21T13:51:47","slug":"touring-amman-jordan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=12464","title":{"rendered":"Touring Amman, Jordan\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday &#8211; September 27, 2017<\/p>\n<p>Today was our day to explore Amman. \u00a0It&#8217;s an ancient city which has grown to become a blend of old traditions and modern advances. \u00a0One contemporary feature is the heavy traffic which clogs all the streets, so\u00a0driving through the city takes a long time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2355.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12543\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2355.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We met our Tourist Department Guard, Hady. Mohammad said not to worry this was a relatively new law that all tour groups had to have a uniformed armed guard for extra security. \u00a0 Hady was a shy young man who had a pleasant smile and carried a hand gun. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t sure if I felt more secure with Hady&#8217;s presence, but it was certainly handy to have him with us when we tried to cross streets because there were no crosswalks or traffic lights. Hady stepped out into heavy traffic, put up his hand, and the cars stopped to let us cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5606.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12547\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5606.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our tour group met after breakfast and we boarded the van to take us to The Amman Citadel. \u00a0This is an important historical site located on one of the seven mountains of ancient Amman. \u00a0The Citadel is considered to be among the world&#8217;s oldest continuously inhabited places. \u00a0The Temple of Hercules in the photo below, was built about 166 AD.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5614.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12546\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5614.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today, the Citadel is a large complex of ancient Roman, Greek, Byzantine, and Islamic ruins built during\u00a0the last two thousand years. \u00a0Nearby is an early Bronze Age cave which dates to the 23rd century BC. \u00a0It was re-used as a burial chamber 4000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5623.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12548\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5623.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Umayyad Palace was built during the early 8th century and later used as a Byzantine church:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5639.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12549\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5639.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5656.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12550\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5656.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A small museum displayed items found at the site. \u00a0We had time to explore the grounds on our own and visit the museum. \u00a0We marveled at a large group of elementary school students who were verbally communicating in English but writing in Arabic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5591.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12551\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5591.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The sign above greeted us at the entrance to the Citadel. \u00a0It shows King Hussein&#8217;s son Abdullah II who is the current King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the OAT tour group resting in the shade at The Citadel:<\/p>\n<p><a src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5658.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, we drove to\u00a0the old quarter of Amman and walked along busy sidewalks to see small shops and businesses. \u00a0Mohammad explained some cultural sights\u00a0as we negotiated crowded streets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5664.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12554\" to imagine sugar cane growing in the desert climate. \u00a0The young man in the middle of the photo pushed dried canes into a noisy machine and the other man filled our cups with sweet water.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5688.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12558\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5688.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a very high prices:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5762.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12562\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5762.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then we drove to the famous Roman amphitheater which dates to the\u00a02nd century\u00a0when the city was known as <em>Philadelphia<\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s an impressive 6000 seat theater located in the heart of downtown Amman. \u00a0Two small museums were located on opposite sides of the arena: the Amman Folklore Museum and the Museum of Popular Traditions. \u00a0Exhibits of traditional Jordanian life were on display.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5797.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12563\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5797.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5770.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12565\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5770.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5790.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, we went to a very nice restaurant called <em>Tawaheen al Hawa<\/em> for lunch and had delicious Jordanian Middle Eastern food: hummus, babaganoush, salads, yogurt, 3 kinds of kebabs, rice, etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5804.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12568\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5804.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2364.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12569\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_2364.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An\u00a0elderly woman sat in the lobby of the restaurant and demonstrated how to make the thin bread Armenians call <em>lavash<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5806.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12570\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC_5806.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We returned to the hotel to rest up for a couple of hours before going out to a Jordanian family&#8217;s house for dinner. \u00a0They were a kind and generous couple who had four young children.
