City, Jerusalem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday &#8211; October 9, 2017<\/p>\n<p>Today we entered the Old City of Jerusalem which is a walled city located within the heart of the modern metropolis of Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3075.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12928\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3075.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We entered through Jaffa Gate, which is one of seven gates, and walked through a labyrinth of ancient alleyways with other tourists, pilgrims, and local religious people. \u00a0The passageways opened to a wide plaza to reveal the Western Wall. \u00a0The wall was originally erected as part of the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple by Herod the Great in 19 BC.<\/p>\n<p>The wall is the holiest place where Jews are able to pray in Israel. \u00a0We walked through security and our bags were put through x-ray machines. \u00a0Here is a view of the Western Wall from the stairs:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8171.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12929\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Men&#8217;s section:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8194.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12931\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Western Wall of the Temple Mount is one of the most significant remnants in Jerusalem from the Second Temple which was destroyed about 2000 years ago. \u00a0Entrance to the women&#8217;s section:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3087.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12932\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3087.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3089.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12933\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3089.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside women&#8217;s section:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3094.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12934\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3094.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The family below flew all the way from San Diego, California to have Josh&#8217;s Bar Mitzvah at the Western Wall. \u00a0The women of the family stood on benches to look over a barrier and watched Josh&#8217;s ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8191.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12935\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Western Wall Tunnel is an underground tunnel and runs under buildings of the Old City of Jerusalem. \u00a0 Walking in the Western Wall Tunnel:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3100.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12937\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Religious Jews have access to underground portions of the Wall and pray there:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3107.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12938\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3107.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The total length of the tunnel is 485 meters (1600 feet) which is significantly more than the 60 meters (200 feet) of exposed wall in the plaza at ground level.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/GEOO9631.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12939\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/GEOO9631.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It began to rain as we walked along the Via Dolorosa (Way of Sorrows). This is believed to be the path that Jesus walked on the way to his crucifixion. \u00a0The <em>Stations of the Cross<\/em> refer to a series of images depicting Jesus on that day. \u00a0We followed the 14 Stations of the Cross:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8207.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12940\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3150.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12941\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Stations of the Cross are located primarily in the Arab Quarter of the Old City. \u00a0Walking through that quarter is fun because of all the colorful shops. \u00a0It&#8217;s a lot like any Middle-Eastern\u00a0<em>Souq. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3155.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12942\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3155.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The church of the Holy Sepulcher also called Church of the Resurrection is located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. \u00a0The church contains two of the holiest sites in Christianity: \u00a0the site where Jesus was crucified and Jesus&#8217;s empty tomb, where he is said to have been buried and resurrected.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12943\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was a very long line around the inside of the rotunda to get into the <em>Aedicule. \u00a0<\/em>This is the marble chapel which encloses the tomb and a fragment of the stone that sealed the tomb.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3179.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12944\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3179.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12945\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Stone of the Anointing:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The church was very crowded and it was difficult to see very much or take decent photographs. \u00a0However it was a very interesting experience.<\/p>\n<p>We had lunch in the Arab Quarter at a restaurant called <em>Dajani<\/em> as the noon Call to Worship was broadcast from a nearby minaret.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8220.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12949\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked through the ancient winding alleyways of the Old City and stopped by the modern Jewish Quarter. \u00a0We also visited the Room of the Last Supper and King David&#8217;s Tomb.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12950\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12951\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8229.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We left the Old City of Jerusalem by the Jaffa Gate and passed the Tower of David, also known as the Jerusalem Citadel, built in 1310 by \u00a0Mamluk sultan and expanded in 1547 by Suleiman the Magnificent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12952\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_8298.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At night we returned to the Tower of David to see an historical light &amp; music show. \u00a0It was very well done.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"
