October 4, 2017<\/p>\n<p>It was overcast and 24 degrees Celsius this morning in the Israeli city of Haifa. \u00a0I slept very well and peacefully at the lovely Bay Club Hotel. \u00a0It&#8217;s a landmark building dating back to 1912.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7061.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12742\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7061.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a tasty breakfast in the sunny enclosed patio, we boarded our tour bus for an hour&#8217;s ride northeast to the hill-top city of Safed, or in Hebrew:<em> Tsfat.<\/em>\u00a0 There was very little traffic because it was the first day of the holiday of Sukkoth, the &#8220;Festival of the Tabernacles,&#8221; and businesses and schools were closed. \u00a0We drove through the northern part of Israel, near the Lebanese border, between the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean Sea.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/300px-Lower_Galilee_map.svg_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12780\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/300px-Lower_Galilee_map.svg_.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7069.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12743\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7069.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With an elevation of almost 3,000 feet above sea level, Safed is the highest city in Israel. <em>\u00a0Tsfat<\/em> is mentioned in the Jerusalem Talmud and is considered one Judaism&#8217;s Four Holy Cities, along with Hebron, Jerusalem, and Tiberias.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7082.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12744\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7082.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to a legend, Safed was founded by a son of Noah after the great flood. \u00a0The city has remained a center of Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism since the 16th century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7098.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12745\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7098.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Safed\/Tsfat was a pleasant city We entered the Tzfat Gallery of Mystical Art and met the artist, Avraham Loewenthal. \u00a0We sat in his showroom and he spoke about the practice of Kabbalah and the influence on his artworks. \u00a0Kabbalah is a \u00a0school of thought that originated from Judaism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7103.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12746\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7103.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kabbalah seeks to define the nature of the universe, human beings, and the purpose of existence. \u00a0It also presents methods to understanding and to eventually attain spiritual realization.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2699.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12747\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2699.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Historically, Kabbalah emerged from earlier forms of Jewish mysticism. \u00a0Today, the Safed Rabbi, Isaac Luria is considered the father of contemporary Kabbalah. \u00a0Safed was a pleasant city with rectangular stone houses stacked on the side of the hill. \u00a0There were many art galleries, restaurants, and cafes for tourists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7114.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12748\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7114.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked through the quiet streets, passing homes, small synagogues, and galleries. \u00a0In a peaceful alleyway, a musician waited for us and played wonderful selections for us.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7158.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12750\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7147.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12749\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We saw ma<i>ny sukkah <\/i>as we walked through the city. These are the temporary huts which families build near their homes and use during<i>\u00a0Sukkoth,\u00a0<\/i>the week-long festive holiday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7164.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12760\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the narrow alleyways in Tsfat reminded me of the medieval byways in historic French towns.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12752\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our group stopped into one of the many tiny synagogues on an unmarked passageway. \u00a0Alon Neeman, Rafi&#8217;s assistant, answered our questions and explained the history of the synagogue. \u00a0The founders of this particular synagogue were Jewish people from Spain.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12753\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7175.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12754\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_7175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We continued to explore and entered &#8220;The International Center for Tzfat Kabbalah.&#8221; \u00a0The plaque read that the center was &#8220;founded by the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County Florida.&#8221; \u00a0We saw an introductory film about Kabbalah and a leader provided more information and suggested we purchase some books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_2717.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12762\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_2717.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked through a passageway filled with shops and galleries on our way back to our bus. \u00a0I took some more photos and stopped for a cooling ice-cream.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7208.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12764\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7205.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12765\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_E2719.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12766\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_E2719.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We left Safed\/Tzfat as the mid-day sun was warming up. \u00a0We drove down the mountainside and looked across the beautiful fertile valley of the Galilee region.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7210.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12767\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was time for lunch so Rafi suggested we stop at a gas station road-side restaurant which he knew. \u00a0I have no idea about the name of the restaurant as typically many signs in Israel were written only in Hebrew.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7216.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12768\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had a limited choice of kebabs or <em>shawarma<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; the Middle Eastern sandwich on pita bread. \u00a0We chose between chicken or lamb then picked veggies and topped it off with tahini sauce. \u00a0Yummy. \u00a0Everything was fresh and delicious and we enjoyed an outdoor picnic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7214.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12769\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We drove to the city of Nazareth and the bus parked near the Basilica of the Annunciation. \u00a0Tradition claims this site was the house of Virgin Mary and the site where the angel Gabriel appeared to her and announce she would bear the Son of God.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7243.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12785\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were surprised to see a modern two-story church which was constructed in 1969. \u00a0 \u00a0The new Basilica was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Muzio and was an unusual design for a church.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_2721.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12772\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_2721.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7291.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12787\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7291.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside, down central stairs, the lower level of the church contains the <em>Grotto of the Annunciation<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7258.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12788\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7258.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first shrine was built there in the 4th century and was a simple altar in the cave in which Mary had lived. \u00a0A second church was built on this site during the Crusades in 1102.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_2728.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12773\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_2728.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The main level comprises a large open space with the apse with altar and pews for worshipers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7276.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12789\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7276.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Magnificent large mosaics donated by many foreign countries lined the interior walls of the church.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7279.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12790\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_7279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Near the Basilica of the Annunciation, there was St. Joseph&#8217;s Church which was a lovely small Franciscan church. \u00a0It was built in 1914 over the remains of much older churches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_2733.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12775\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_2733.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We returned to the Haifa Bay Hotel to relax and we noticed they had built a <em>Sukkah<\/em> hut near the dining room. \u00a0Rafi gave us craft-paper and we had fun making paper-chain decorations for the <em>Sukkah<\/em>. \u00a0Our<em>\u00a0Sukkah<\/em> looked beautiful!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12777\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_2736.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had another amazing day full of stimulating experiences and thought-provoking ideas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday &#8211;
