Palestinian Territories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday &#8211; October 18, 2017<\/p>\n<p>There was another crowd of pilgrims in the breakfast room of the Manger Square Hotel this morning. \u00a0Large groups of people from every corner of the world come to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity: Philippines, Australia, Germany, Italy, England, Africa, and, of course, the U.S. \u00a0View of modern Bethlehem this morning from my window:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_9679.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13238\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_9679.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was another bright sunny morning. \u00a0We checked out of the hotel and drove north to the city of Ramallah. \u00a0On the way, we stopped at Yasser Arafat&#8217;s mausoleum. \u00a0He was the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization for five decades, who died suddenly in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9708.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13240\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9708.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yasser Arafat&#8217;s tomb is located in the\u00a0<em>Al\u00a0Muqata&#8217;a,\u00a0<\/em>or Presidential Compound and is the headquarters of the current Palestinian Presidential Office and the Palestinian Authority. \u00a0The compound, which was reduced to rubble in 2002, today includes a government building, a museum which honors Arafat, his mausoleum, and a mosque.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13241\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9714.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1994, Yasser Arafat received the Nobel Peace Prize together with Yitzak Rabin and Shimon Peres, the Israeli leaders, for their peaceful efforts in the Oslo Accords. \u00a0The peaceful intent of the Accords divided both the Israelis and Palestinians within their own societies, and the leaders were criticized for their peace efforts by their own people. \u00a0In Israel last week, we had visited the site where Yitzak Rabin was killed in Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9730.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13243\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9730.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We stopped to see the 20 foot-tall statue of Nelson Mandela which was given to the city of Ramallah by the South African city of Johannesburg in 2016. \u00a0Mandela was an ardent supporter of the Palestinian cause and a champion for Middle East peace.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9735.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13244\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9735.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest surprises to me about the entire region, is how hilly it is! \u00a0Ramallah spreads across several steep hills. \u00a0As we drove to the city center through a neighborhood of affluent houses, I looked across a valley at the high-rises on the next hill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9792-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13246\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9792-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ramallah, which means &#8220;God&#8217;s hill,&#8221;\u00a0is located just six miles north of Jerusalem and serves as the administrative capital of the Palestinian National Authority. \u00a0It&#8217;s a modern city with an exciting youthful vibe. \u00a0There are fashionable shops, lots of traffic, restaurants, bars, and movie theaters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9785-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13248\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9785-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ramallah was historically an Arab Christian town, which might account for its religiously relaxed atmosphere. \u00a0Alcohol is served in restaurants and many women do not wear headscarves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9806.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13250\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9806.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We sampled the <em>kebbeh\u00a0<\/em>cooked fresh from the street-side vendor in the photo above. \u00a0It&#8217;s made with cracked wheat, onions, finely ground beef, lamb or goat. \u00a0Hisham bought us <em>&#8220;Palestinian ice-cream&#8221; <\/em>from\u00a0the famous <em>Rukab Ice-cream Shop<\/em>\u00a0which has been in business since 1941. \u00a0It is gooey, sticky, and thicker than regular ice-cream, but tastes delicious. \u00a0Also called<i>\u00a0booza <\/i>or<i> mastic, <\/i>it&#8217;s made from resin from a local tree. \u00a0It&#8217;s supposed to melt slower than regular ice-cream, which is a benefit in this hot climate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9765.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13251\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9765.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More scenes walking around Ramallah: \u00a0a street century modern city, a mule and cart drove by:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9793.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13254\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9793.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lavash &amp; bread maker:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13255\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We left Ramallah and drove back into the desert northbound toward Jericho. \u00a0It was easy to forget the surrounding terrain while walking around a bustling city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9862.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13257\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9862.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was a cafeteria-style lunch at the Jericho Temptation Restaurant. \u00a0Afterwards, we went to the Jericho Oasis Archaeological Park. \u00a0This is the site of the <em>tel es-Sultan<\/em>, a UNESCO-listed archaeological site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9883.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13258\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9883.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sultan&#8217;s Hill was inhabited from the 10th millennium BC and has been called &#8220;the oldest town in the world.&#8221;<em>\u00a0<\/em> Excavations began in 1868 and continue today in cooperation with archaeologists from Rome, Italy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9907.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13259\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9907.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A defensive wall &#8211; The Wall of Jericho &#8211; was also discovered which dates back to 8,000 BC. \u00a0We looked across the plain to the Mount of Temptation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9904.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13260\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9904.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Close by was Hisham&#8217;s Palace which belongs to a category of &#8220;desert castles&#8221; and is an important early Islamic archaeological site. \u00a0The site was part of the Umayyad dynasty during the first half of the 8th century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9927.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13268\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9927.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hisham&#8217;s Palace consists of three main parts: a palace, ornate bath complex, and an agricultural enclosure or park. \u00a0There was also an elaborate irrigation system which provided the complex with water from nearby springs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13263\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9954.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Carved stucco found at the site is of exceptional quality and decorative elements represent the finest of the Umayyad period of art. \u00a0The most famous art at the site is the &#8220;tree of life&#8221; mosaic found in the bath complex.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9932-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13269\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9932-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Below is a model of what historians believe the palace looked like:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9950.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13265\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_9950.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the sun cast long shadows on Hisham&#8217;s Palace, we left the site and drove a short distance to the Jericho Resort Village Hotel. \u00a0The dining room overlooks the outdoor patio and the pool.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3604.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13266\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3604.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hotel was an oasis in the desert with a large hotel building and smaller family cottages built along the pool area. \u00a0We each had individual two-room suites in the cottages. \u00a0The architecture reminded me of the adobe desert communities we had been passing for the last few weeks.
