Bethany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday &#8211; October 20, 2017<\/p>\n<p>All good things must come to an end. \u00a0This was the last day of the Overseas Adventure Travel tour: <em>Israel: the Holy Land &amp; Timeless Cultures<\/em>. \u00a0I had been traveling in Jordan, Israel, and Palestine since September 24th and I was getting a bit &#8216;road weary.&#8217; \u00a0The schedule for the day was packed with interesting sights in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_9905.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13322\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_9905.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a pleasant evening in the hotel in Jericho, our first destination was the Mount of Temptation. \u00a0This was a hill in the Judean desert where it was believed that the temptation of Christ took place. \u00a0On top of the cliff there is a modern wall that sits on the ruins of a fortress which dates from about 130BC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_0309.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13323\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_0309.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Half way up the mountain is the Greek Orthodox Monastery of the Temptation or <em>Deir al-Qarantal<\/em> in Arabic. \u00a0Access to the monastery is by cable cars, which leaves tourists in a cliffside complex of restaurants, shops, and a cafe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_0320.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13324\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_0320.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a climb down on a wide path along the side of the mountain and then up steep limestone stairs to reach the monastery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_0412.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13325\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_0412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was a wonderful view of the city of Jericho and the distant mountains from the monastery:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13326\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC_0346.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The earliest monastery was constructed by the Byzantines in the 6th century above the cave traditionally said to the place where Jesus spent 40 days and nights fasting and meditating. \u00a0Jericho was conquered by the Arabs in the 630s and centuries later invaded by the Crusaders in 1099. \u00a0Two churches were built on the mountain at that time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0359.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13328\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0359.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The current monastery was built in 1895 around a cave chapel that marks the stone where Jesus supposedly sat and prayed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0386.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13329\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was great fun to ride in the cable cars and see the panoramic view of the city of Jericho and the ruins of the archeological site we had visited yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>We then drove out into the desert to <em>Nabi Musa. \u00a0<\/em>On the way we saw a large group of jeeps gathering on top of a sandy hill for a road race or Jeep surfing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0446.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13330\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0446.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Nabi Musa<\/em>\u00a0means &#8220;Prophet Moses&#8221; in Arabic and it is believed that this is the site of the tomb of Moses.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13331\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0447.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"201\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is also the name of a seven-day festival held here in the spring. \u00a0The celebration is considered &#8220;the most important Muslim pilgrimage in Palestine.&#8221; \u00a0The Jerusalem-Jericho road was one of the primary routes used to make a pilgrimage to Mecca.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0485.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13332\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0485.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Originally, the building was a point from which pilgrims could look across the Jordan Valley to see Mout Nebo where the tomb of Moses was thought to be located.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0470.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13333\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0470.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Negev Bedouin tribes share a belief in the sanctity of the site. \u00a0We looked into one of the stone rooms at the large sarcophagus covered with a green silk cloth. \u00a0There was much reconstruction going on which was planned to be finished in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0495.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13334\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0495.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We left and drove through the desert again to the city of <em>Al-Eizariya,<\/em> sometimes referred to by its medieval name of Bethany.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0503.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13335\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0503.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The city is located on the southeastern slope of the Mount of Olives (Area B), less that two miles from Jerusalem. \u00a0The name <em>al-Eizariya<\/em> refers to the story of Lazarus of Bethany who was raised from the dead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0510.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13336\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0510.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were lucky to be able to gain access into the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Lazarus, which was completed in 1955 and is under the &#8220;Custody of the Holy Land Franciscan Friars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0518.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13337\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0518.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since the 16th century, the site of the tomb has been occupied by the al-Uzair Mosque. \u00a0The entrance to the tomb today is down a flight of uneven rock-cut steps from the street to a square chamber serving as a place of prayer. \u00a0There were additional steps leading to a lower chamber believed to be the tomb of Lazarus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0537.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13338\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0537.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0548.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13339\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0548.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had an excellent Palestinian lunch nearby in Bethany, then continued further into the desert to <em>Wadi Qelt<\/em> in the eastern part of the West Bank, occupied territories. \u00a0The valley, or <em>wadi<\/em> in Arabic, is believed to be the &#8220;Valley of the Shadow&#8221; mentioned in Psalm 23.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0568.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13340\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0568.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bus stopped and parked by the side of the road and we got off to look around at the magnificent scenery. \u00a0We just needed a caravan of camels to complete the picture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0572.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13343\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0572.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked up to the top of the hill with a band of Israeli bicyclists. \u00a0I watched as the young men peddled their bicycles over the rough terrain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0578.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13344\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0578.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the summit, we were all rewarded with a view across the valley of the Monastery of St. George of Choziba. \u00a0The monastery is a religious complex carved into the sheer rock wall of a narrow gorge. \u00a0The valley parallels the old Roman road to Jericho and is the backdrop for the parable of the Good Samaritan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0583.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13345\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0583.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>St. George&#8217;s Monastery began in the 4th century with a few monks who wanted a desert experience and lived in caves along the cliffs. \u00a0The monastery was founded in the 5th century by John of Thebes, but named after another monk, St. George of Koziba.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0589.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13346\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0589.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The monastery went through many centuries of destruction and rebuilding. \u00a0It was completely restored by a Greek monk named Callinicos between 1878 to 1901. \u00a0A few monks still live in the compound which is one of five monasteries still functioning in the Judean Desert. \u00a0The monastery is open to pilgrims and visitors. \u00a0Recently, access has been improved for visitors who wish to hike for three hours to get to the complex.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0627.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13347\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0627.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We drove back to the city of Jericho, which means &#8220;city of palms,&#8221; and walked around the center of town.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0626.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13348\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0626.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0606.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13349\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0606.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0622.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13350\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0622.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0625.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13351\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0625.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our last stop for the day was &#8220;The Old Sycamore Tree,&#8221; which recalls a biblical story of the tax collector, Zacchaeus. \u00a0The tree has helped Jericho to attract visitors and pilgrims to the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0638.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13352\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0638.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tree is on the pastoral grounds of the new Russian Museum, which was built in 2011. \u00a0However, we did not have time to visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0641.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13353\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0641.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like every other place I have visited, among the archeological and historical sights, the real treasures are the people who live there and interact with us. \u00a0The Palestinian man in the photo below offered us dates and sang a lovely song to our group in English. \u00a0He spoke about kindness and good will toward all people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13354\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0643.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back at the hotel we enjoyed a wonderful farewell dinner and said our goodbyes to each other and to Hisham Ikhmayes, our excellent Palestinian guide. \u00a0Hours later, a car drove me from Jericho to the airport in Tel Aviv. \u00a0Driving quickly along dark roads through Israel at four o&#8217;clock in the morning was a fitting end to this amazing journey in this part of the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3634.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13355\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_3634.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I took the picture above from my window on the plane in Paris. \u00a0It had been raining and the sun was attempting to rise. \u00a0No more deserts. \u00a0No more camels. \u00a0No more palm trees. \u00a0I was north again;
