\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1063.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13415\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1063.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We wanted to look at the countryside and explore the desert surrounding Phoenix and Scottsdale. \u00a0Jeff found a &#8220;scenic byway&#8221; called the Apache Trail, named for the Apache Indians who used the trail to cross Superstition Mountains. \u00a0Later, the road became a stagecoach trail that ran through the mountains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_0965.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13416\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_0965.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were immediately intrigued by the large Saguaro cactuses which grow in this area. \u00a0They are native in this region of the American Southwest and grow naturally only in the Arizona Sonoran Desert, Mexico, and southern California. \u00a0Saguaro cactuses can grow to be 40 feet tall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_0973.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13417\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_0973.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We continued to Canyon Lake in Tonto National Forest. \u00a0It was strange to see water in the middle of a desert. \u00a0I read that the lake was a fresh water reservoir formed by damming the Salt River in 1925. \u00a0The landscape looked like it had not rained here in many months. \u00a0It&#8217;s amazing that anything grows or lives here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13418\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Apache Trail winds through 40 miles of steep rugged desert mountains. \u00a0The narrow twisting road is mostly unpaved east of the town of Tortilla Flat all the way to Roosevelt Dam.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13419\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1020.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tortilla Flat, Arizona is the last surviving stagecoach stop along the Apache Trail and has a population of 6 people. \u00a0The town was originally a camp ground for prospectors who searched for gold in the Superstition Mountains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13420\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1027.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13421\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1027.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today, the town is privately owned and includes a restaurant, souvenir shop, and a small museum. \u00a0We continued on the Apache Trail for several miles along the unpaved section but after a while decided to turn around at Lower Fish Creek Hill because the road was too bumpy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1057.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13422\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1057.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We stopped at several overlooks to take photos. \u00a0It was an amazing day!
