{"id":13440,"date":"2017-12-16T16:23:47","date_gmt":"2017-12-16T21:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=13440"},"modified":"2018-01-04T11:10:06","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T16:10:06","slug":"exploring-verde-valley-arizona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=13440","title":{"rendered":"Exploring Verde Valley, Arizona"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday &#8211; December 16, 2017<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s so much to see and do around Sedona, Arizona. \u00a0It&#8217;s a vibrant community of almost 11,000 people energized by 4 million annual tourists. Cool and clear weather enticed us to explore the area around Sedona known as the Verde Valley. \u00a0We drove west to a village called \u00a0Old Town Cottonwood and found Larry&#8217;s Antiques &amp; Things.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1339.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13441\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A large sign informed us that Larry&#8217;s includes three acres of &#8220;collectibles&#8221; inside and outside many large rambling buildings. \u00a0We could have spent several days perusing Larry&#8217;s collections of endless stuff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1351.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13442\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1374.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13443\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1374.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1378.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13444\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1378.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a while, we drove a short distance to Clarkdale to see the Verde Canyon Railroad Station. \u00a0Some other time we&#8217;ll take the train through the scenic region. \u00a0We followed a sign on the road to the Tuzigoot National Monument which is a pueblo ruin built by the Sinagua people between 1125 to 1400.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1386.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13445\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jeff used his senior citizen National Parks Pass to gain entry to the historical site and we climbed up to the top of the hill to see the former Native American community. \u00a0There was a fantastic 360 degree view of the entire valley.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1395.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13446\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1395.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_3769.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13447\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_3769.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We continued west and followed signs to the town of Jerome. \u00a0We drove up the twisty winding road around hairpin turns to the top of the mountain and saw a small sign telling us we were 5246 feet above sea level. \u00a0Another mile-high city?! \u00a0Jerome had been a copper mining town and was built on the side of a mountain. \u00a0All the houses had endless amazing views.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1418.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13448\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1418.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since it was getting late, we turned around and went back toward Sedona. \u00a0We stopped at several overlooks or roads which had good views of the spectacular red rocks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1458.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13449\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1458.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1463.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13450\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1463.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many visitors go to Sedona to take advantage of the wide assortment of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, camping, boating, and fishing. \u00a0A specialized group of tourists go to Sedona to be energized and inspired by the &#8220;mysterious cosmic forces which emanate from the red rocks.&#8221; \u00a0There are supposed to be five &#8220;vortexes&#8221; of energy for the believers. \u00a0Nonetheless, the scenery is incredibly spectacular!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1476.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13451\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1476.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1485.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13452\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1485.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We drove through several residential neighborhoods and marveled at the architecture of the homes just below amazing rock formations. \u00a0If I lived there, I would spend a lot of time watching the light change across the rocks and take too many photos&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1486.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13453\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1486.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rock formation in the photo below is called &#8220;Snoopy.&#8221; \u00a0It&#8217;s supposed to be Charlie Brown&#8217;s dog, Snoopy, lying on top of his dog house. \u00a0(Snoopy&#8217;s round snout is on the left.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1487.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13454\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1487.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday &#8211; December 16, 2017 There&#8217;s so much to see and do around Sedona, Arizona. \u00a0It&#8217;s a vibrant community of almost 11,000 people energized by 4 million annual tourists.
