{"id":13459,"date":"2017-12-17T18:03:34","date_gmt":"2017-12-17T23:03:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=13459"},"modified":"2018-01-04T06:40:12","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T11:40:12","slug":"sedona-to-the-grand-canyon-arizona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=13459","title":{"rendered":"Sedona to the Grand Canyon, Arizona"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday &#8211; December 17, 2017<\/p>\n<p>When we planned this trip, we knew we would be very close to the Grand Canyon, but neither one of us had intended to go there. \u00a0We had read about road closures due to snow and bad weather during the winter, especially around Flagstaff. \u00a0However, this time we realized there was a dry spell in Arizona. \u00a0And it wasn&#8217;t very cold. \u00a0And no snow had fallen yet in the high altitudes! \u00a0So, we thought we would give it a try!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1509.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13460\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1509.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jeff and I checked our phones for weather forecasts, road conditions, and directions. \u00a0We got an early start because the day was short and sunset would be about 5:30pm at this latitude. \u00a0We choose the Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive out of Sedona and we were off!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13461\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC_1500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was 39 degrees, sunny and cloudless in Sedona when we left. \u00a0We were going into higher altitudes so we carried extra layers of clothing. \u00a0The Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive was ranked as one of the top five scenic drives in America by Rand McNally. \u00a0As the website says, it is a &#8220;breathtaking stretch of beauty on a winding road that climbs from Sedona to the top of the Mogollon Rim.&#8221; \u00a0We stopped at the overlook which was at an elevation of 6420 feet.<\/p>\n<p>We knew there would be one relatively boring hour between Flagstaff and Grand Canyon Village. \u00a0Jeff had last visited the Canyon in 1965 when he was a college freshman. \u00a0I visited in 1978 when my sons were young. \u00a0We wondered if it had changed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1601.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13466\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1601.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The roads weren&#8217;t very crowded. \u00a0We both were very excited when we arrived at the Grand Canyon National Park entrance gate. \u00a0A sign informed us that we were at 6772 feet elevation. \u00a0We parked in a huge parking lot and followed pedestrian signs out to the edge of the canyon. \u00a0Yes! \u00a0It was still there! \u00a0Still Magnificent!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1533.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13468\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1537.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13469\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1537.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1582.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13470\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1582.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1549.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13471\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1549.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1546.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13472\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DSC_1546.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_1293.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13473\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_1293.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Grand Canyon is the most spectacular natural wilderness area in the world. \u00a0It is indescribable and photos do not capture the majestic beauty, breathtaking size and scope, or variety of colors of the canyon. \u00a0I&#8217;m very happy we took the opportunity to experience the Grand Canyon on this trip.
