Doha, Qatar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday &#8211; January 31, 2018<\/p>\n<p>After a yummy fresh breakfast in the Santa Monica Breakfast Club, we had a welcome briefing with all 24 Vantage Tour participants. \u00a0Then we all went out for a &#8220;panoramic tour&#8221; of Doha. \u00a0The coach drove us to the historic district of <em>Msheireb<\/em> and we stopped for a quick visit to see the historic museum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1893.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13524\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1893.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We saw an excellent film about the history of Qatar and the development of the economy from pearl diving to the discovery of oil and natural gas. \u00a0It was a good introduction to this region of the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_3984.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13525\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_3984.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, we went to the Falcon Souq to see the shops where Qataris buy their hunting birds. \u00a0Falconry is a very popular sport among wealthy Qatari citizens who pay upwards of $25,000 for each falcon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1901.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13526\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1901.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1909.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13527\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1909.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1911.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13528\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1911.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Across the street was the famous <em>Souq Waqif \u00a0<\/em>which has been a marketplace for Bedouin nomads for centuries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13529\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1900.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Qatari citizens drive white Toyotas, BMWs, or Mercedes SUVs around the city. \u00a0Unlike some other Arabian countries, Qatari women are allowed to drive, however many have chauffeurs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1922.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13530\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1922.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1925.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13531\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1925.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1935.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13532\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1935.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had a delicious Middle Eastern\/Syrian lunch in a restaurant called <em>Damaskas One <\/em>which was located on the street behind the Souq. \u00a0We also had some time to explore inside the Souq and the numerous shops outside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1948.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13533\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1948.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1961.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13534\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1961.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We passed the prominent landmark building of the <em>Abdullah Bin Zaid al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center<\/em>. \u00a0The center&#8217;s most distinguished feature is its mosque which has a unique circular minaret.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1977.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13535\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1977.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next place we visited was the Museum of Islamic Art, which was designed by IM Pei. \u00a0The building stands out as an architectural gem. \u00a0It was built on a man-made island at one end of the Corniche and is surrounded by the extensive landscaped lawns and ornamental trees of MIA Park.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1980.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13536\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1980.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The collection is spread over three floors and the museum houses the largest collection of Islamic art in the world. \u00a0The building is a feast for the eyes and the artworks are fantastic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1987.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13538\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1987.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1992.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13539\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_1992.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13540\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13541\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2016.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After several hours at the museum, we returned to the Grand Hyatt to relax. \u00a0Later, we had a delicious three-course dinner in the Italian restaurant at the hotel. \u00a0It was a fun evening and a good welcome to Qatar.<\/p>\n<p><a
