\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Linda took this photo of one of the beautiful announcers on a local television station. \u00a0She first appeared without a mask, but after a commercial break she returned wearing the red <em>batula<\/em>. \u00a0Later, I learned that young Arabian women sometimes wear one of the traditional face-coverings, typically worn by Bedouin women from the Persian Gulf region, as a fashion statement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2432.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13620\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2432.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After an excellent buffet breakfast at the Grand Hyatt Muscat, we met our young local guide, Mohammad. \u00a0Then we all set out for Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque which was inaugurated by the Sultan of Oman in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4324.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13621\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4324.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All visitors are required to dress modestly, avoiding tight clothing and covering their arms and legs. \u00a0Women and girls older than seven years, must cover their hair. \u00a0<em>Abeyyas <\/em>and scarves were available for rent. \u00a0The women&#8217;s <em>musalla<\/em>\u00a0or prayer hall was in a separate building from the main hall and could accommodate 750 worshippers:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2453-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13923\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2453-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We crossed the courtyard and entered the main <em>musalla<\/em> of the Grand Mosque, which is accessible only to men during prayer services.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2461.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13624\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2461.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The main prayer hall was &#8220;breathtaking&#8221; and accommodates 6,500 worshippers inside and thousands more outside for a total of 20,000 people.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2481.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13625\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2481.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4568.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13626\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4568.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The beautiful Persian carpet is the second-largest hand loomed single-piece Iranian carpet in the world. \u00a0It took 600 women four years to weave it. \u00a0The largest carpet is in the central prayer hall of the Sheikh Zayed mosque in Abu Dhabi which we will visit next week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4310.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13627\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4310.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The chandelier hanging from the dome above the prayer hall is 46 feet tall. \u00a0It was manufactured by the Faustig Company of Italy and is the world&#8217;s largest chandelier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4304.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13628\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4304.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tiles were beautiful and the craftsmanship of the details in the construction of Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque were incredible. \u00a0I went back outside to a brilliant sunny morning and had fun walking around and taking photos of the peaceful and lovely grounds. \u00a0The marble on the floors everywhere were highly polished!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2526.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13629\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2526.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2511.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13630\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2511.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a House Muscat which is the &#8220;leading arts and cultural organization in the Sultanate of Oman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2533.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13635\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We all boarded the bus and drove east to the Murtah Souq, which is an old-fashioned bazaar overlooking the Mutrah Corniche.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2547.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13636\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2551.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13637\" busy street to see the Corniche:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2585.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13642\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2585.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Old wooden <em>dhows<\/em> were anchored near naval and commercial ships. \u00a0One of Sultan Qaboos&#8217; yachts was at the dock.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2578.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13643\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2578.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2580.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13644\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2580.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next our bus drove us along the rugged coast and we passed several interesting-looking villages nestled among the \u00a0rocky mountains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2601.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13645\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2601.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We arrived at the Bait Al Zubair Museum which is a heritage and cultural center. \u00a0The museum is funded by the Zubair family and displays their collection of Omani artifacts. \u00a0The exhibits featured traditional clothing, jewelry, household items, stamps and coins, as well as weapons and the famous <em>khanjar <\/em>which is a traditional Omani dagger used for\u00a0ceremonial occasions. \u00a0Unfortunately, photography was not permitted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2604.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13647\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2604.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2618.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13648\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2618.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nearby were the Ministry of Finance and other government buildings and <em>Al Alam Palace<\/em> which is the ceremonial palace of <em>Sayyid Qaboos bin Said Al Said<\/em>, the Sultan of Oman.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2639.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13650\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2639.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2646.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13651\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2646.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our adventure guide Maged Salib aka &#8220;Magic&#8221; and local guide Mohammad in the large public square outside the entrance to the palace:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2629.jpg\"><img height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, the tour group drove a short distance to Shangri-la&#8217;s <em>Barr Al Jissah Resort &amp; Spa<\/em> to have a fabulous lunch at their\u00a0<em>Al Tanoor<\/em> Restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2677.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13654\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2677.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A brochure stated that &#8220;<em>Al Tanoor<\/em> serves classic cuisines of the Arabian Gulf region in a traditional Omani atmosphere.&#8221; \u00a0In addition to Arabian cuisine, the buffet offered Mediterranean, Persian, Indian, and Turkish delights.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2676.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13655\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2676.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a young Omani woman regarding the role of women in Omani culture. \u00a0I wish her a lot of luck in all her endeavors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4342.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13658\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4342.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We posed for a group photo:<\/p>\n<p><a not, we had dinner at the hotel restaurant:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2738.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13660\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2738.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later in the evening, Linda, Celia, Dave, and I took a taxi to the annual Muscat Festival 2018 being held at Al-Amerat Public Park. \u00a0We didn&#8217;t know what to expect but it was a lot of fun!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4451.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13661\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4451.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4392.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13662\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4392.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a heritage booths, ethnic dancing, handicrafts, magic show, musical performances, soccer games, Souq, bazaar, and market place, activities for families, and food for sale.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4475.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13664\"
