It had been expanded and rebuilt several times over the centuries with a recent renovation in 1990.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2807.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13675\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2807.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fort was surrounded by groves of date palm trees with the <em>Jabal Akhdar<\/em> mountains in the distance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2863.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13676\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2863.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2862.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13677\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2862.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2847.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13678\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2847.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nearby was <em>Ain A&#8217;Thawwarah &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>a beautiful oasis with a hot spring:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4507.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13679\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4507.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were told this was a popular place for family picnics, especially on weekends. \u00a0The water was clear and full of tiny fish. \u00a0Some people put their feet in the stream and had the fish nibble their skin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2908.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13681\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2908.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A group of teenage boys sat in a circle playing a card game:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2901.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13682\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2901.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our last stop for the day was a visit to the <em>Amouage<\/em> perfume factory. \u00a0This is supposed to be &#8220;the most expensive perfume in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2947.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13683\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2947.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4513.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13684\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4513.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After we returned to the hotel, Linda and I walked along the Corniche. \u00a0Young women in long <em>abayas <\/em>and sneakers walked quickly along the pathway and boys played soccer on the sand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2987.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13685\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2987.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our tour guide, Maged Salib found a good Turkish restaurant for our group called <em>Bait Al Shams\u00a0<\/em>which was built into the side of a mountain. \u00a0We enjoyed a tasty meal served outdoors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4532.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13686\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4532.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we returned to the Grand Hyatt Hotel, we noticed a sign near a stairway that read, &#8220;Ladies Wedding Reception in Progress &#8211; Please Do Not Enter.&#8221; \u00a0Maged explained that wedding parties are for women only and encouraged us to peek in. \u00a0Linda and I walked down the stairs and were cheerfully greeted by two women who said they were the bride&#8217;s &#8220;Aunties.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4545.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13691\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4545.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We admired their stunning dresses, makeup, and henna adornments. \u00a0They invited us to stay at the reception. \u00a0The bride appeared in a fabulous logan green gown and let us take her picture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4553.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13692\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4553.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bride, her Aunties, and other female relatives lined up to make a grand entrance into the ballroom which was filled with hundreds of women.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4562.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13693\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4562.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We took our leave and as we walked back up the stairs, we noticed a young man dressed in traditional Omani menswear. \u00a0We asked him if he was going to the wedding and he informed us that he was the groom. \u00a0He was very happy to let us take his picture. \u00a0We wished him good luck and success in his marriage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4564.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13694\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4564.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What a day!!!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday &#8211;
