February 6, 2018<\/p>\n<p>After all the hype and schemes for several years, I finally made it to Dubai &#8211; &#8220;the Las Vegas of Middle-East.&#8221; \u00a0However, I soon discovered that Dubai is a gigantic sprawling city with distinct neighborhoods. \u00a0Our hotel, the Hyatt Regency, was in the &#8220;historic&#8217; neighborhood of <em>Deira<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3249.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13717\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3249.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Frommer&#8217;s Guide, &#8220;Deira is Dubai&#8217;s oldest and busiest neighborhood, filled with the traditional sights, sounds, and smells of the city.&#8221; \u00a0From our 11th floor window, we could see the cruise ship harbor in the distance and the commercial wharf of <em>Deira<\/em>\u00a0lined with traditional wooden\u00a0<em>Dhows<\/em>\u00a0loading goods to be transported to Iran, India, and other Persian Gulf countries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2996.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13718\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_2996.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our first stop of the day was the Dubai Museum located in <em>Al Fahidi<\/em> Fort. \u00a0Built in 1787 out of coral rock and mortar, the fort is the oldest building in Dubai.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3073.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13719\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3073.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several wooden boats,\u00a0<i>al abra,<\/i> which are still used today,\u00a0were on display in the courtyard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3093.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13720\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3093.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The museum was well planned with life-sized dioramas showing existence in the region before the discovery of oil. \u00a0As visitors walked along an indoor path, there were sounds and displays of shops filled with craftsmen, vendors, tailors, carpenters, textile workers, and depictions of desert life with a date farm, camels, and Bedouin families. \u00a0In the courtyard outside there was a full-sized\u00a0<em>Dhow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3154.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13721\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3154.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tour group continued to the creek where we took several water-taxis, <em>abras, <\/em>across to <em>Bur Dubai. \u00a0<\/em>This congested waterway reminded me of Venice! \u00a0It was full of boats of all sizes and shapes. \u00a0Who knew that Dubai was water and desert?!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3183.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13724\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3183.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4653.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13725\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4653.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3171.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13726\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>the other side of the creek was the more interesting part of <em>Deira,<\/em> with Dubai&#8217;s famous street markets, including a Gold Souk, Textile Souk, Spice Souk, and Fish Souk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3189.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13727\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3210.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13728\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were led into a large shop selling spices and camel milk chocolates and, after a sales pitch, we were finally able to explore the Souq on our own. \u00a0Like its Arabian peninsula neighbors, most of the shoppers and vendors are &#8220;ex-pats&#8221; &#8211; people from other countries who came to Dubai to work with 2-year contracts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6137.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13729\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_6137.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3232.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13730\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, the bus took us to the business center of Dubai and to our next stop which was <em>Burj Khalifa<\/em> &#8211; the tallest building in the world!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3322.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13733\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3322.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We drove through a lot of traffic but finally reached the famous skyscraper area of the city for which Dubai is known. \u00a0Similar to Qatar and Oman, there was much construction going on everywhere. \u00a0<em>Burj Khalifa<\/em> is part of the Dubai Mall and we had to walk through the mall to get to the entrance to the elevators which go to the observation decks of the building.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3299.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13734\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3299.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like any main tourist attraction, we had to wait for our timed tickets to get on long lines to the elevators up to the top. \u00a0There were two entrances which we had to go through for security: one for women &amp; children and another just for men.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4660.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13735\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4660.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Statistics: Burj Khalifa is 2,717 feet tall with 160 stories. \u00a0It was opened in 2010 and was designed to be part of a development which includes: 30,000 homes, 9 hotels, parkland, 19 residential towers, and an artificial lake.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4664.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13736\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4664.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was an indoor observation deck with 360 degree views of Dubai and an outdoor observation area. \u00a0<em>Burj Khalifa<\/em> set all the records for the tallest building in the world. \u00a0It took the elevator 9 seconds to climb up to the 148th floor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4670.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13737\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4670.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I walked around the observation areas, took pictures, and looked out at the other tall buildings built in the flat white desert. \u00a0Then I took the elevator back down to ground level.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3321.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13738\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3321.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When the group was assembled, we were taken to have lunch at Jumeirah Emirates Towers&#8217; excellent Italian restaurant, <em>Alta Badia<\/em>, on the 53rd floor. \u00a0It is the world&#8217;s third-tallest hotel building in the world. \u00a0We had a wonderful lunch with a fantastic view of Dubai!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3340.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13739\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3340.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We passed several interesting buildings on our way back to our hotel. \u00a0This region of the world must be a wonderful place for professional architects to design and create fabulous buildings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3337.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13740\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3337.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The building below is called &#8220;The Dubai Frame.&#8221; \u00a0It just opened January 1, 2018 and has a museum and observation deck connecting the two towers. \u00a0Unfortunately, we didn&#8217;t have time to visit it. \u00a0Oh well, next time!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4657.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13741\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4657.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We rested for several hours at out hotel and watched the sun set over Dubai Creek:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4679.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13742\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4679.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maged, our tour leader, had a great surprise dinner for us. \u00a0He had made reservations at The Atlantic which was rated &#8220;the best seafood restaurant in Dubai.&#8221; \u00a0The restaurant was at one end of Souq Al Bahar and was billed as the &#8220;ultimate dining experience in downtown Dubai.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4717.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13744\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4717.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We sat outdoors on the deck of The Atlantic overlooking the lake surrounded by illuminated buildings. \u00a0<em>Burj Khalifa<\/em>\u00a0dominated the night sky across the water.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4723.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13745\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4723.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Dubai fountain was installed in the lake to rival the famous fountain in Las Vegas, Nevada and &#8220;danced&#8221; with musical accompaniment every half hour. \u00a0What Fun!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4747.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13746\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4747.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As an added feature, there was a light show cast onto the exterior of <em>Burj Khalifa<\/em> at regular intervals! \u00a0What a show!! \u00a0What an experience!!! \u00a0Incredible&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4753.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13747\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_4753.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday &#8211;
