{"id":13811,"date":"2018-02-10T15:47:19","date_gmt":"2018-02-10T20:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=13811"},"modified":"2018-02-25T17:43:50","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T22:43:50","slug":"sightseeing-in-abu-dhabi-uae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=13811","title":{"rendered":"Sightseeing in Abu Dhabi, UAE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday &#8211; February 10, 2018<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4126.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13812\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4126.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today was our first full day in the city of Abu Dhabi which is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. \u00a0The UAE is a federation of seven emirates, each governed by an absolute monarch. \u00a0The Emir of Abu Dhabi has traditionally served as president of the United Arab Emirates since the establishment of the federation in 1971.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3913.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13813\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3913.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We began our tour of the city at the fruit and vegetable market. \u00a0Dates are a popular fruit which are grown in this region of the world. \u00a0We stopped at a shop which sells 30 different kinds of dates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3930.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13814\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3930.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was also a large fresh fruit and vegetable market with great looking produce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3933.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13815\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3933.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our next stop was the port and fish market. \u00a0It&#8217;s difficult to think of fresh fish on the Arabian peninsula, but the UAE is located on the Persian Gulf and sea food is one of their major products. \u00a0In the photo below, the fishermen are coiling a net.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3969.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13816\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3969.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3955.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13817\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3955.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were fishing boats of all kinds and sizes lining the harbor. \u00a0We walked into the huge fish market nearby along the pier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3989.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13818\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3989.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most of the vendors were friendly and didn&#8217;t mind tourists taking photos of them at work. \u00a0They spoke English because they were workers from the southern part of India.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3987.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13819\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3987.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3983-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13820\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_3983-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4003-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13821\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4003-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fish was incredibly fresh! \u00a0A person could buy a fish and have it cooked to order at one of the stands nearby. \u00a0There was a line of people waiting for their seafood lunches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13822\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4015.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We boarded the bus and drove to the Heritage Village to see exhibits of the traditional desert way of life before oil was discovered in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4063.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13823\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4063.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4073.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13824\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4073.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was an outdoor museum with displays of traditional crafts, tents, irrigation system display, mosque, and shops.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4090.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13825\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4090.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our next stop was the highlight of the day with a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. \u00a0We could see the magnificent building from our hotel and up close, it was spectacular!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4164.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13826\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4146.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13827\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mosque is large enough to accommodate over 40,000 worshippers, while the main prayer hall can hold over 7,000 people. \u00a0The complex covers an area of more than 30 acres.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4242.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13828\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Construction was completed in 2007 and the design was inspired by Persian, Islamic, Moorish, and Arab influences. \u00a0The carpet in the main hall is the world&#8217;s largest and took two years to complete.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4215.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13829\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The seven chandeliers of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque were imported from Germany and incorporate millions of Swarovski crystals. \u00a0A unique lighting system was designed to reflect the phases of the moon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4254.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13830\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4240.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13831\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC_4240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later in the evening we had a real treat of going to the Emirates Palace Hotel for dinner.
