(pronounced: <em>&#8220;pee-ray-us&#8221;<\/em>) The ship had quietly crept into town while we slept. Approximately seven miles away is Athens, the capital city of Greece, one of the oldest cities in the world. As the brochure states, &#8220;the goddess Athena gave the city an olive tree as a token of her protection and the god Dionysus gave the grape vine to the city.&#8221; What more does anyone need?!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6813.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14105\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6813.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had made reservations for a bus to drive us seven miles from the port of Piraeus to The Acropolis in central Athens so we could visit the historic site on our own. \u00a0The bus stopped at an Olympic stadium which the guide explained was built for the Olympic Games of 1896. We all got off the bus to take pictures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6821.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14106\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6821.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The traffic was unbelievably slow. \u00a0Our &#8220;panoramic tour&#8221; of Athens took an hour and a half and we finally arrived at the Melina Mercouri statue which marks the pedestrian street to the Acropolis. \u00a0Our guide led the group part way to the Acropolis and set us free to climb up to the &#8216;high city.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6898.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14107\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6898.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6889.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14108\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6889.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We located the very long line to buy tickets and queued up and waited. \u00a0Jeff overheard a man say there was a &#8220;cash only booth&#8221; without a line so I went over to take a look while Jeff held our place in line. \u00a0Sure enough I found a very short line and bought tickets: 20 euros each. \u00a0We walked up, and I do mean UP, to the top of the Acropolis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6869.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14109\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6869.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Parthenon is the largest structure on the Acropolis. \u00a0Another interesting ruin is the <em>Erechtheion<\/em> which was another temple dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6867.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14110\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6867.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Construction of the Parthenon began in the 5th century BC by Pericles, who was a prominent Athenian general during the Golden Age of Greece. \u00a0It was a former temple dedicated to the goddess, Athena.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6870.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14111\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6870.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our ascent up to the ancient land of the gods &#8211; with thousands of other tourists, was very crowded. \u00a0Of course there was scaffolding on the Parthenon but we were there! We finally made it to the top! \u00a0It was so exciting to finally be standing right there on the ancient Acropolis overlooking Athens, Greece!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6840.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14112\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6840.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6892.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14113\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6892.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6853.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14114\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6853.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the top of the Acropolis, there are spectacular 360 degree views of the beautiful city below. \u00a0It was a thrilling experience to be standing above Athens and see the city spread out like a magnificent multicolored carpet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6888.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14116\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6888.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We eventually climbed down the steps and walked back toward the meeting place to take the bus back to port. \u00a0We had a little extra time so we walked down one of the tiny streets and into the <em>Plaka<\/em> district. \u00a0This is an ancient neighborhood which attracts many tourists. \u00a0We found an outdoor cafe and rested with a couple of iced cappuccinos and Greek baklava.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6361.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14117\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6361.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It had been another amazing day!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friday May 25, 2018 I looked out of our balcony door early this morning to see the city of Piraeus.
