It was a glittering sunny day with a pale blue sky and a nice breeze blowing. I peered out of our glass door and saw the medieval red roofs of Rhodes. It was too early to stay up so I went back to bed for another hour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6250.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14064\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece and was famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. \u00a0An earthquake in 226 BC destroyed the huge statue. \u00a0Throughout history, Rhodes played an important part on the trade routes between the West and the East. \u00a0The island has been inhabited since 4000 BC and was dominated by every civilization in the region.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6268.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14065\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6268.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6343.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14069\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6343.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our ship, the Celebrity Reflection, was docked just across the road from the ancient wall of the \u201cOld Town.\u201d \u00a0We followed the wall to one of the seven gates to gain entry, which turned out to be Virgin Mary\u2019s Gate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6438.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14066\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6438.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6431.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14068\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many shops hadn\u2019t opened yet and a few shopkeepers were just opening their doors for the early risers. The town was quiet and we heard birds singing and the sounds of people inside their homes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6320.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14070\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6320.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6382.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14071\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6382.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The island of Rhodes is located only 12 miles away from the Turkish coast and boasts 200 days of sunshine per year. There\u2019s a modern city on the other side of the <em>Mandraki<\/em> peninsula but we just had time and energy for the historic part.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6394.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14072\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6394.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6283.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14073\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6283.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6292.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14074\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6292.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Old Town is supposed to be one of the best preserved medieval cities in the world and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The impressive fortifications with towers and a deep moat, were built by the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John beginning in 1309. \u00a0Today, 6000 people live inside the ancient walls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6349.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14075\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6349.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6366.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14076\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6366.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there were many tourist shops and plenty of visitors, but it was still fun to walk along the narrow streets on worn sea stones. \u00a0We stopped for cold drinks at a <em>taverna<\/em> that also offered free Wifi and we explored the castle with a full moat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6273.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14077\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/DSC_6273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later on the ship at night, the Blu Dining Room served Greek food: hummus, baba ganoush, and cold cucumber &amp; yogurt soup. \u00a0Yummy!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday &#8211; May 23, 2018 The ship arrived very early in the morning at the beautiful island of Rhodes.
