{"id":14247,"date":"2018-09-29T01:05:30","date_gmt":"2018-09-29T05:05:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14247"},"modified":"2018-10-14T01:24:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-14T05:24:10","slug":"nawiliwili-kauai-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14247","title":{"rendered":"Nawiliwili, Kauai, Hawaii"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>September 29, 2018<\/p>\n<p>We awoke to a heavy tropical rain on our glass door with limited visibility. \u00a0The Golden Princess slowed to a crawl as we approached land. \u00a0I saw a tall black rock jutting our from the sea ahead. \u00a0We had arrived at the town of Nawiliwili on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. \u00a0This was \u201cThe Garden Island\u201d of Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_6886.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_6886.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 6886\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were scheduled for an excursion to the Waimea Canyon early in the morning. \u00a0The excursion was our excuse to ride a bus across the island so we could see more of this lesser known and infrequently visited island. \u00a0The driver doubled as a guide and informed us that the interior mountain receives more than 400 inches of rain per year. \u00a0He claimed that the western coast gets a mere 10 inches of rain annually.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_7869.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7869.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 7869\" width=\"400\" height=\"222\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It became obvious why Kauai is called The Garden Island. \u00a0The landscape was very green with lush tropical foliage and flowering trees everywhere. \u00a0Rocks at the seashore were black volcanic stones.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_7791.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7791.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 7791\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_7783.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7783.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 7783\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was a \u201clava-tube blow hole\u201d known as Spouting Horn. \u00a0When the tide is right, waves surge through a submerged air \u201ctube\u201d in the lava and erupt in a geyser of sea water. \u00a0Ancient Hawaiians believed the loud groan emitted by the sea water was the voice of the angry goddess Kaikapu. \u00a0A legend tells us that the coast was guarded by a large lizard who ate anyone who tired to swim or fish there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_7846.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7846.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 7846\" width=\"400\" height=\"249\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bus climbed a mountain to 3400 feet above sea level so we could see Waimea Canyon. \u00a0It is the largest canyon in the Pacific and is called \u201cThe Grand Canyon of the Pacific.\u201d \u00a0The opposite side of the colorful crevice was visible when I arrived at the viewing platform. \u00a0As I stood there taking pictures, I watched as a thick fog blew in from the right and completely concealed the canyon. \u00a0It was amazing to watch the entire canyon disappear in the fog!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_7860.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7860.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 7860\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bus returned to the ship at 2:00 o\u2019clock which gave us enough time to get ready for the \u201cSail-Away\u201d at 4:30. \u00a0We went up to the 15th deck and watched as the Golden Princess applied its thrusters and slowly pushed away from the dock. \u00a0The lines were brought aboard and the crew turned the bow toward the sea.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block;
