{"id":14295,"date":"2018-10-06T03:19:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-06T07:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14295"},"modified":"2018-10-17T04:07:31","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T08:07:31","slug":"moorea-french-polynesia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14295","title":{"rendered":"Mo&#8217;orea, French Polynesia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>October 6, 2017<\/p>\n<p>The ship stayed overnight at the dock in Papeete, Tahiti then left very early in the morning to anchor near the neighboring island of Mo&#8217;orea in the French Polynesian chain. The Golden Princess slowly approached the butterfly-shaped island at sunrise and set anchor in one of the protected harbors. \u00a0We were told that Mo\u2019orea means \u201cyellow lizard\u201d in the Tahitian language.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8338.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8338.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8338\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Several people said Mo&#8217;orea was the island that inspired the paradise legend of Bali \u2018Hai in the story of South Pacific. As the ship\u2019s tender drew closer to the island, we saw the jagged mountains carpeted with lush green foliage. A\u00a0woman carried a huge freshly caught fish along the tender dock:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8365.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8365.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8365\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jeff and I signed up for a photographic excursion to see several scenic locations on the island. \u00a0Our small group of 15 people boarded two 4X4 vehicles and we set out to explore. \u00a0Our first stop was an exquisitely beautiful white-sand beach.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8408.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8408.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8408\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Golden Princess floated peacefully at anchor while we took pictures.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8397.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8397.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8397\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We drove to a botanical garden to photograph beautiful tropical plants and flowers. There was also a greenhouse where vanilla plants were growing. \u00a0The guide said vanilla was very difficult to grow. \u00a0At a small cafe in the gardens, we sampled jams made from a variety of fruits.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8474.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8474.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8474\" width=\"400\" height=\"226\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We drove along and admired the beautiful scenery. \u00a0Coconuts, mangoes, pineapples, breadfruit, papayas, bananas and other fruits grow all over the tropical island. \u00a0We held on tightly as our 4X4 vehicle climbed a steep mountain to get a good view.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8484.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8484.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8484\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8498.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8498.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8498\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mo\u2019orea is an extinct volcano and the sides of the mountains are the sides of the original caldera. \u00a0As we stood on top of the mountain we could see the magnitude of the volcano all around us. \u00a0After a few hours, we returned to the tender dock.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8585.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8585.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8585\" width=\"400\" height=\"256\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The local people set up a market for the cruise ship passengers to buy souvenirs and trinkets. \u00a0One enterprising woman cut a hole in the top of fresh chilled coconuts and inserted a straw for drinking. \u00a0The coconut milk was cold and refreshing. \u00a0If a purchaser brought the coconut back to the woman, she removed the coconut meat with a special tool so we could eat it easily.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8613.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8613.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8613\" width=\"400\" height=\"325\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The locals dressed in beautiful floral print garments. \u00a0I took a photo of a young woman looking at her cell phone in the shade of a palm tree. \u00a0Many Tahitians wore interesting tattoos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8625.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8625.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8625\" width=\"224\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We reluctantly returned to the ship, after falling in love with Mo\u2019orea. \u00a0It was the most incredibly beautiful place we had ever seen in our lives.
