{"id":14313,"date":"2018-10-09T05:16:35","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T09:16:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14313"},"modified":"2018-10-17T05:31:20","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T09:31:20","slug":"pago-pago-american-samoa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14313","title":{"rendered":"Pago Pago, American Samoa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday &#8211; October 9, 2018<\/p>\n<p>We had two days at sea aboard the Golden Princess. \u00a0The Pacific was relatively calm; the air was warm and humid.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8670.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8670.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8670\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most of our fellow passengers seemed to be lounging around the pools. \u00a0We busied ourselves with trivia contests, listened to books-on-tape, did some laundry, enjoyed leisurely meals talking to fellow passengers, visited an \u201cOutlet Sale,\u201d cheered contestants in the Scrap Heap Boat Building Finals, relaxed, and watched a show one evening which featured a hypnotist.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_7130.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IMG_7130.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 7130\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This morning, the ship arrived at the the city of Pago Pago (pronounced \u201cPahngo Pahngo\u201d) on the island of Tutuilia, which is the main island of American Samoa. This was another chain of volcanic islands strewn across the Pacific Ocean. \u00a0A large tugboat came out to help the ship negotiate the buoys.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8696.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8696.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8696\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8700.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8700.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8700\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The harbor of Pago Pago is supposed to be the most protected commercial deep-water harbor in the Pacific. It is home to two of the largest tuna companies in the world. The Golden Princess maneuvered up to a dock which was shorter than the ship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8724.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8724.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8724\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After we docked, we walked down the gangplank with other passengers. \u00a0I noticed that the local men wore wrap-around skirts. \u00a0The two security guards who posed with a passenger wore formal \u201cskirts,\u201d other men wore skirts which had bright colors and floral patterns. \u00a0The women wore floral print cotton dresser with sleeves.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8753.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8753.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8753\" width=\"261\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The word was out that the only place with free WiFi was the local McDonald\u2019s, a short walk away from the port. \u00a0We went there and joined the crowd of other passengers who were attempting to get connected.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8780.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8780.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8780\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a while, we gave up trying to get on the WiFi and went out to explored the small tropical town. \u00a0There wasn\u2019t much to see except run-down buildings. \u00a0The island was another extinct volcano and the protected harbor was the former caldera of the volcano. \u00a0Later, we returned to Micky D\u2019s and were able to connect to WiFi. \u00a0We happily retrieved and sent email to our family.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8796.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8796.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8796\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Local Samoans had a semi-permanent market set up on a grassy patch of land. \u00a0They sold souvenirs, t-shirts, and trinkets for cruise ship passengers and tourists.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8814.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8814.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8814\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mount Pioa, also known as \u201cRainmaker Mountain\u201d provides Pago Pago with the highest annual rainfall of any harbor in the world. \u00a0Fortunately for us, the mountain wasn\u2019t working today and it didn\u2019t rain all day. \u00a0But the weather was warm and very humid.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8871.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8871.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8871\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After we returned to the ship, we sat on one of the upper decks and watched the Golden Princess sail out of the harbor. \u00a0The tugboat and pilot boat went back to the pier and as we cruised back out onto the Pacific Ocean there was a magnificent sun set over the island of Tutuilia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_8896.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_8896.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8896\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday &#8211; October 9, 2018 We had two days at sea aboard the Golden Princess. \u00a0The Pacific was relatively calm; the air was warm and humid.
