{"id":14422,"date":"2018-10-27T00:16:08","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T04:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14422"},"modified":"2018-11-07T16:55:35","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T21:55:35","slug":"akaroa-new-zealand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14422","title":{"rendered":"Akaroa, New Zealand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday &#8211; October 27, 2018<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0372.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0372.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0372\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Akaroa is a tiny town of about 700 permanent residents located in a gorgeous protected harbor on the eastern coast of the South Island of New Zealand. \u00a0There are no port facilities so cruise ships have to anchor in the bay and passengers take tenders to the town. This is the entire town of Akaroa:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0430.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0430.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0430\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first settlers of Akaroa were from France so the village is considered a \u201cFrench\u201d town. \u00a0Yellow spring flowers were in bloom along the top of the surrounding hills.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0409.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0409.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0409\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many of Majestic\u2019s passengers booked excursions to the nearby city of Christchurch. \u00a0Jeff and I preferred to stay in Akaroa and explore the small town. \u00a0We made the right choice because Akaroa was absolutely gorgeous. \u00a0Even with the invasion of a thousand people, Akaroa was peaceful and calm and lovely.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0399.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0399.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0399\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Everywhere we looked there was a postcard photo. \u00a0Akaroa became another one of our favorite towns in the world and we wished it was closer to home so we could visit often.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0420.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0420.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0420\" width=\"400\" height=\"234\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistoric\u201d buildings were only a century old but they were well maintained and painted in bright colors:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0485.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0485.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0485\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0438.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0438.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0438\" width=\"400\" height=\"238\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some streets had French names like Rue Joli and several business flew the French flag.
