October 29, 2018<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0619.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0619.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0619\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were rough seas all night long as the ship passed\u00a0through Foveaux Straight and\u00a0rounded the southern end of New Zealand. \u00a0Our destination was Fjordland National Park also known as Te Wahipounamu in the Maori language. \u00a0The park takes up the entire south-western coast of New Zealand and is a UNESCO Heritage Site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0626.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0626.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0626\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ship entered Dusky Sound about 8:30 in the morning as the clouds began to lift and the sun poked through. \u00a0Ian Thorne, one of the park rangers was aboard to provide commentary over the loudspeaker as we slowly rode through the calm and beautiful fjord. \u00a0The ship sailed around Resolution Island and out through Breaksea Sound.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0647.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0647.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0647\" width=\"400\" height=\"246\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Majestic continued north to Doubtful Sound and entered our second fjord about eleven o\u2019clock under a bright blue sky and excellent visibility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0660.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0660.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0660\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0661.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0661.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0661\" width=\"400\" height=\"278\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ian Thorne\u2019s commentary was excellent because he was born in the region and lived his entire life in the National Park. \u00a0He told about his many hiking and camping trips and the park\u2019s conservation efforts to preserve New Zealand&#8217;s flora and fauna.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_7758.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7758.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 7758\" width=\"400\" height=\"325\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_7764.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7764.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 7764\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ship continued to cruise up the windy coast. \u00a0The plan was to turn in and explore three fjords before crossing the Tasman Sea to Australia. \u00a0After Dusky and Doubtful Sounds, the Majestic entered the amazing and awe-inspiring Milford Sound.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0695.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0695.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0695\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The mountains in Milford Sound were taller and more spectacular than the previous beautiful Dusky and Doubtful Sounds. \u00a0There was snow on top of the mountains and we watched as the ship slowly passed through the narrow stone canyon walls. \u00a0Fiordland reminded me of Norway.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0724.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0724.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0724\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fjords were spectacular and the views were once-in-a-lifetime experiences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_7811.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7811.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 7811\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later in the afternoon, Majestic left beautiful New Zealand behind and we continued westward. \u00a0The ship was back in the open ocean, crossing the windy and rough Tasman Sea on our way to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. \u00a0The Captain informed us that the wind had gusts up to 70 knots and waves over 16 feet high. \u00a0I\u2019m glad I\u2019m on a big ship with stabilizers and not in a small boat!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_7830.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7830.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 7830\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We have two Sea Days on the Tasman Sea before we reach the Australian island of Tasmania. \u00a0We\u2019re looking forward to a few activities and lots of rest &amp;
