{"id":14481,"date":"2018-11-01T17:03:15","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T21:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14481"},"modified":"2018-11-07T17:07:02","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T22:07:02","slug":"hobart-tasmania-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14481","title":{"rendered":"Hobart, Tasmania, Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday &#8211; November 1, 2018<\/p>\n<p>The Tasman Sea lived up to its reputation as a windy &amp; wild sea but we finally arrived at the Australian island of Tasmania early this morning. \u00a0The Majestic Princess steadily cruised up the Derwent River to the city of Hobart and quietly tied up at the dock.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_7898.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7898.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 7898\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had read that Hobart gets only 40 days of sunshine a year so I was very surprised and elated to see a beautiful sunny day from our balcony. \u00a0It was a cool 43 degrees but crystal clear! \u00a0Mount Wellington towered over the capital city:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_7909.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_7909.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 7909\" width=\"400\" height=\"287\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since this was our first stop in the country of Australia, all the passengers had to disembark and be screened by the Australian Immigration Service. \u00a0The process was well organized with many inspectors so we passed through quickly and easily. \u00a0We had obtained on-line Visas which were electronically connected to our passports, before we left home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0776.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0776.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0776\" width=\"400\" height=\"256\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hobart is the capital city of the island state of Tasmania. \u00a0The Parliament Building overlooks the port and the CBD (Central Business District) had many law offices. \u00a0The port is designated an historic district of renovated warehouses. Salamanca Street has many boutiques and cafes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0804.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0804.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0804\" width=\"400\" height=\"246\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0852.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0852.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0852\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We went to the Hobart Museum and Art Gallery to see their eclectic collection of historic and modern artifacts. \u00a0There were many well designed interactive exhibits. \u00a0The museum described the plight of the original aboriginal people and the waves of European immigrants. \u00a0There was an excellent exhibit on early expeditions to the Antarctic. \u00a0We also saw displays of plants and animals which are unique to Tasmania, including the Tasmanian Devil.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0905.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0905.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0905\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The weather was fantastic today and warmed up to 77 degrees. \u00a0We considered ourselves very lucky. \u00a0Our time ashore passed quickly and we returned to the ship well before our 4:30 \u201cSail Away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0925.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0925.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0925\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Two tugboats were tied up at an adjacent dock waiting to assist the Majestic Princess later.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0936.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0936.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0936\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Clouds began to form over Mount Wellington before we cast off and by the time of our departure, there was a gray mist over Hobart and it began to rain lightly. \u00a0We were so lucky to enjoy a gorgeous sunny day in Tasmania. \u00a0Tonight we travel north toward the continent of Australia. \u00a0We will arrive in Melbourne on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_0948.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_0948.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 0948\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday &#8211; November 1, 2018 The Tasman Sea lived up to its reputation as a windy &amp; wild sea but we finally arrived at the Australian island of Tasmania early this morning. \u00a0The Majestic Princess steadily cruised up the Derwent River to the city of Hobart and quietly tied up at the dock.
