Darling Harbour, Sydney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday &#8211; November 14, 2018<\/p>\n<p>There was a light rain falling this morning &#8211; misting really, 63 degrees. \u00a0Just enough rain to clear the streets of the Central Business District (everyone here calls it the CBD) of tourists and office workers. \u00a0We walked up George Street, the main street in Sydney to explore and learn more about the city.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_8643.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_8643.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 8643\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Construction is everywhere! \u00a0New tall modern buildings are being built wherever we look and George Street is torn up because of construction of a new light-rail system. \u00a0A shop keeper who was complaining about the \u201cnever ending\u201d disruption, said Sydney &#8220;has the second highest number of construction cranes, after Abu Dhabi.\u201d \u00a0We walked to the famous Queen Victoria Building:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2624.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2624.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2624\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The QVB (Aussies shorten everything) was built in 1898 and takes up a whole city block. \u00a0It was built of Sydney sandstone and proudly stands among modern skyscrapers as a reminder of Sydney\u2019s past. \u00a0Originally a marketplace, today it houses high-end shops and boutiques on three floors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2613.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2613.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2613\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a Tea Room tucked away on an upper floor which serves High Tea daily. \u00a0I was told those are Baccarat crystal chandeliers:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2572.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2572.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2572\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were cafes and coffee shops:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2592.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2592.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2592\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And Santa was having a conversation with a young dad and child:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2599.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2599.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2599\" width=\"287\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later we walked down Market Street to explore Darling Harbor. \u00a0It had stopped raining by the time we crossed Pyrmont Bridge, but was gray and overcast.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2653.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2653.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2653\" width=\"400\" height=\"234\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the area of Sydney\u2019s huge Convention Center so there are theaters, hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, a shopping mall, a ferris wheel, and 2 ferry docking stations. \u00a0Modern apartment buildings line the harbor all around. \u00a0There are also several museums and attractions nearby and the Australian National Maritime Museum. \u00a0It\u2019s a happening place!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2671.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2671.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2671\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2682.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2682.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2682\" width=\"400\" height=\"243\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Maritime Museum had an array of sail and power boats as well as a submarine and a war ship. \u00a0Below is the Carpentaria Lightship that was in service from 1917 to 1985 in the Gulf of Carpentaria on the northern coast of Australia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_2699.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC_2699.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 2699\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We used our Opal Cards to ride the ferry back to our hotel near Circular Quay. \u00a0It was a fun day!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block;
