It\u2019s too bad Australia is so far from home. It\u2019s a wonderful city to visit. Our hotel is located in the historic \u201cRocks\u201d district so we learned about the redeveloped waterfront neighborhood. High-end modern shops and restaurants in the old buildings:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3963-2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3963-2.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3963 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"233\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Rocks&#8221; was the original 19th century port of Sydney filled with commercial sailing ships, whaling vessels, and ferries. \u00a0It flourished with warehouses, chandleries, and houses for dock workers. \u00a0One side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was built in 1932, is anchored in the Rocks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_8772.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_8772.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 8772\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Everyday, we saw people climb the steps to reach the top of the Bridge in all kinds of weather. There are 1,332 steps to the top. Climbers wear special suits and harnesses. It must be a fantastic view! \u00a0We were NOT tempted to do the climb.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_8773.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_8773.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 8773\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Climbers are not allowed to take any personal belongings with them, including cameras. Guides take photos of the adventurers at the top of the bridge. I would be very frustrated not to have my camera.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3080.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3080.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3080\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Saturdays and Sundays the end of George Street was closed to traffic and a fun weekend market was set up. \u00a0They sold everything from jewelry, masks, juice, food, soap products, craft beer, tee-shirts, corn on the cob, clothes, and tourist souvenirs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3958.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3958.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3958\" width=\"400\" height=\"256\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Face painting at the market:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3084.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3084.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3084\" width=\"400\" height=\"321\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was spring in Australia so the beautiful blue Jacaranda trees were in bloom everywhere. \u00a0This one was in a narrow alleyway between buildings in the Rocks:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3053.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3053.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3053\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were many good restaurants, cafes, and boutiques in the historic buildings:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3058.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3058.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3058\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Warm weather brought out musicians working for donations:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3043.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3043.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3043\" width=\"400\" height=\"287\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People rested on comfortable bean-chairs on the ground while they enjoyed the music:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3067.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3067.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3067\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This fellow always attracted a crowd:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3104.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3104.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3104\" width=\"400\" height=\"341\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a birds-eye view of the Rocks along the approach to the bridge:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3037.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3037.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3037\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sunset beyond the Sydney Harbour Bridge:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_8962.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_8962.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 8962\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday &#8211; November 17, 2018 We\u2019re having a great time in Sydney we and love exploring this dynamic city.
