{"id":14716,"date":"2018-11-20T20:30:10","date_gmt":"2018-11-21T01:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14716"},"modified":"2018-12-23T20:31:43","modified_gmt":"2018-12-24T01:31:43","slug":"the-blue-mountains-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14716","title":{"rendered":"The Blue Mountains, Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday &#8211; November 20, 2018<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3309.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3309.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3309\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had read about \u201cThe Blue Mountains\u201d which are located about two hours west of Sydney. \u00a0We left early in the morning and took the train from Central Station to the town of Katoomba.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3480.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3480.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3480\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The mountains get their blue hue from the droplets of oil in the air from the native eucalyptus trees. \u00a0We took a bus from Katoomba to a tourist area called Scenic World which offered multiple ways to view the mountains. \u00a0There was a cable car to go down into the valley to experience the Rainforest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3343.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3343.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3343\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the cablecar, we passed the rock formation called \u201cThe Three Sisters\u201d and heard several different legends about the famous siblings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_8871.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_8871.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 8871\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We walked along the wooden walkways on the floor of the Rainforest. \u00a0Unfortunately, there\u2019s been a longterm drought in the region and the forest wasn\u2019t very moist. \u00a0I guess we were lucky it wasn\u2019t raining. \u00a0There was a variety of rainforest trees which was very interesting. \u00a0Coal mining was the main commodity here about a century ago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3368.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3368.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3368\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scenic World reminded me of an amusement park with several \u201crides\u201d to go over, under, in, and around the nearby mountains and valleys. \u00a0At the other end of the Rainforest walkway, we took the Scenic Railway back up to the top of the mountain. \u00a0It was like a short fast roller coaster ride. \u00a0But we went up backwards! \u00a0I imagine going down might be very scary!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3423.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3423.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3423\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_8862.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_8862.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 8862\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scenic World was crowded with multi-generational families. \u00a0Later, we rode across another deep gorge in a giant cablecar that held 75 people. \u00a0The floor of the car opened during its passage to reveal the tops of the trees below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3463.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3463.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3463\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3441.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3441.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3441\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_3467.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_3467.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 3467\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later in the late afternoon, we caught a bus to take us to the train station to return to Sydney. \u00a0We decided to take the train from the nearby town of Leura on the same railroad line. \u00a0The Leura post office was decorated for Christmas, but with 70 degree temperatures, it doesn\u2019t feel like Christmas!
