{"id":14798,"date":"2018-12-02T21:24:57","date_gmt":"2018-12-03T02:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14798"},"modified":"2018-12-23T21:26:59","modified_gmt":"2018-12-24T02:26:59","slug":"easo-lifou-island-new-caledonia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14798","title":{"rendered":"Easo, Lifou Island, New Caledonia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday &#8211; December 2, 2018<\/p>\n<p>Last night our ship left Noumea and cruised 120 miles across the Coral Sea to Lifou Island. \u00a0This is the most populous of the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia. \u00a0Lifou is bigger than the island of Tahiti and it is the largest coral atoll in the South Pacific.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9305.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9305.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9305\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Amsterdam slowly passed by the coral reef that surrounds Lifou and we anchored in the beautiful Baie de Santal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4351.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4351.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4351\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We took one of the tenders into shore:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4307.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4307.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4307\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most of the people on Lifou are Kanak because the French government declared the Loyalties an indigenous reserve in 1899. \u00a0As a result the residents were spared the worst features of colonialism. \u00a0The Kanaks are one of the original Polynesian settlers of the region.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9320.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9320.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9320\" width=\"400\" height=\"304\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Primitive straw huts were set up to provide shade for a few local people who offered hair braiding, massages, or coconut drinks for sale. \u00a0There was a more substantial long hut at the top of a small hill where vendors had set up handicrafts and souvenirs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4328.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4328.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4328\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were told that the lifestyle of the local people is unhurried and many people grow their own yams, taro, and sweet potatoes in their gardens.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4331.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4331.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4331\" width=\"346\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had been warned that no one spoke English, just French and Kanak. However, like vendors everywhere, the people had enough words to conduct business.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4347.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4347.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4347\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, we couldn\u2019t visit the entire island. \u00a0We were limited to this gorgeous bay and its beautiful beach. The water was crystal clear, warm and very inviting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9332.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9332.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9332\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Jeff and I didn\u2019t bring our bathing suits so we could just dip our toes in the water. \u00a0It was a beautiful unspoiled beach with pristine water. \u00a0It was my idea of a perfect tropical paradise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9343.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9343.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9343\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We stayed at the beach as long as we possibly could and finally reluctantly took the tender back to the ship. \u00a0The Amsterdam slowly moved out of the bay, past the reef, and into the Coral Sea. \u00a0It had been a wonderful day! \u00a0We watched the sun set over the Pacific\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9360.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9360.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9360\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday &#8211; December 2, 2018 Last night our ship left Noumea and cruised 120 miles across the Coral Sea to Lifou Island. \u00a0This is the most populous of the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia. \u00a0Lifou is bigger than the island of Tahiti and it is the largest coral atoll in the South Pacific.
