{"id":1481,"date":"2010-09-26T19:16:52","date_gmt":"2010-09-26T23:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=1481"},"modified":"2010-10-21T17:33:38","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T21:33:38","slug":"maker-faire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=1481","title":{"rendered":"Maker Faire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saturday &#8211; September 25th<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1801.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1513\" title=\"DSC_1801\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1801.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jeff and I went to the &#8220;1st Annual Maker Faire&#8221; today at the New York Hall of Science in the old World&#8217;s Fair Grounds in Queens. \u00a0It was billed as &#8220;A two-day family-friendly event that celebrates arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science and technology projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mentality&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1837.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1503\" title=\"DSC_1837\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1837.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"317\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The program featured: Robots, Rock-it Science Cabaret, Arc Attack, Chariot Races, Coke Zero &amp; Mentos Fountains, 3-D Printing, and a Life-Size Mousetrap (human life-size!). \u00a0What could be bad with a line-up like this??<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1856.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1486\" title=\"DSC_1856\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1856.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It really was a lot of fun! \u00a0We arrived in Queens about 10:30 in the morning and parked in the parking lot of the new Citi-Field Stadium. \u00a0There were school buses lined up to take participants to the Faire. \u00a0It was still early, so it wasn&#8217;t crowded. \u00a0There were large tents full of exhibitor&#8217;s tables set up all around the main building of the Hall of Science. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1798.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1488\" title=\"DSC_1798\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1798.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were also special exhibits and scheduled performances inside the building. Some large corporations were represented, for example: Ford Motor Company, Hewlett Packard, Popular Mechanics Magazine, Texas Instruments, and Singer Sewing Machines. \u00a0However the booths which were the most fun were the individuals or small groups of people who &#8220;made stuff&#8221; and wanted to show it off or sell a product. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1822.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1489\" title=\"DSC_1822\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1822.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My personal favorite was a kit for a &#8220;Make &amp; Take Marshmallow Shooter&#8221; for eight dollars. \u00a0People had the option of creating their own or buying a kit of parts to be assembled at home. \u00a0Marshmallows were extra!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1863.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1484\" title=\"DSC_1863\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1863.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were a few educational groups represented who made and demonstrated a variety of inventions. \u00a0One group was from a NYC middle school whose students created inventions from cardboard. \u00a0One was a fortune telling box where you inserted a quarter and pushed a red button and your fortune appeared on a small screen. \u00a0I loved the concept, so I donated a quarter to the clever students! \u00a0Later in another tent there was a group of cadets from the US Military Academy demonstrating their scientific invention. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were serious inventions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1885.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1492\" title=\"DSC_1885\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1885.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And there were less serious inventions and creations:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1875.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1493\" title=\"DSC_1875\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1875.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"348\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were biker chicks:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1977.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1494\" title=\"DSC_1977\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1977.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"377\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This was the winner of the international chariot race:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_2022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1495\" title=\"DSC_2022\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Excited fans were cheering during the chariot races:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_2010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1496\" title=\"DSC_2010\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_2010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Outdoor Electric Haircuts with appropriate sound effects: (he&#8217;s lucky it wasn&#8217;t raining!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_2043.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1497\" title=\"DSC_2043\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_2043.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Indoor computer-generated body-movement music:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1906.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1498\" title=\"DSC_1906\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1906.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A Tesla-coil light-show to loud rock music by ArcAttack:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1920.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1499\" title=\"DSC_1920\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1920.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were musical groups singing, dancing, and parading along the tents or performing on an outdoor entertainment stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Music and dancing:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1830.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1500\" title=\"DSC_1830\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/DSC_1830.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We missed the demonstration of the human-size mousetrap and the Mentos fountain and the cigar-box guitar and the motorized book. \u00a0But there&#8217;s always next year&#8230;..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We left the Maker Faire about 2:30 and since we had skipped lunch, we were hungry. \u00a0Lucky us! \u00a0We were in Flushing, Queens where there exists some of the best Chinese food in the city! \u00a0It was a short drive to Main Street &amp; 37th Avenue and we finally parked the car in that huge crazy parking lot on Union Street. \u00a0We just walked across the street to Shanghai Joe&#8217;s because we love their &#8220;soup dumplings&#8221;. \u00a0We also had some delicious pickled cabbage and yummy scallion pancakes. \u00a0Then we went back across the street to the Hong Kong Market for the experience (it&#8217;s great fun!) and to pick up some almond cookies. \u00a0Sorry, I didn&#8217;t take any photos. \u00a0Maybe next time&#8230;..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since we were in Queens, &#8220;terra incognito&#8221; I call it, we had to go to the Lemon Ice King of Corona on 108th Street &amp; Corona Ave. for dessert. They have a website if you want more information. \u00a0We set our new-fangled GPS to go from &#8216;here to there&#8217; and devoured the best ices in NYC! \u00a0I had blueberry ices which are a bright blue with real blueberries and Jeff had tart lemon ices. \u00a0Yummmmm&#8230;&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was a fun day!! \u00a0I told Jeff that we have to start planning our costumes for next year&#8217;s faire. \u00a0We also have to make &#8220;something&#8221; to take to the Maker Faire next year to sell or demonstrate.
