margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9382.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9382.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9382\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mystery Island is a tiny uninhabited \u201cislet\u201d of the Republic of Vanuatu &#8211; previously known as the New Hebrides. \u00a0Vanuatu (the name means \u201cLand Eternal\u201d) is a Y-shaped chain of islands that consists of about 83 islands. \u00a0Granted independence by Britain and France in 1980 as the Ripablik Blong Vanuatu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9488.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9488.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9488\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mystery Island only has a few huts for overnight tourists, primitive amenities for cruise ship passengers, a few trails that bisect the island, and a grassy airstrip built by the U.S. Military. \u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s really a sandbar with the indigenous name of Inyeung, which means &#8220;small island\u201d in the local language. \u00a0No one lives on the island because it\u2019s considered taboo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9386.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9386.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9386\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was a coral reef on the windward side of Inyeung protecting it from the Pacific Ocean. \u00a0The Amsterdam anchored between Mystery Island and the main island, Aneityum, and ran tenders to the smaller island\/sandbar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9388.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9388.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9388\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Vendors from the village of Anelghowhat arrived by small boats in the morning to set up their goods in thatch-roof stalls at the market. \u00a0Goods for sale included batik fabrics and clothing, flower leis, shell jewelry, t-shirts and sarongs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9400.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9400.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9400\" width=\"400\" height=\"370\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9411.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9411.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9411\" width=\"399\" height=\"305\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mystery Island is a true South Pacific paradise: no people, no electricity, no running water, no internet or phone service. \u00a0Local women sell goods, offer massages and hair braiding; men play music and dance and grill lobsters for tourists.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9390.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9390.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9390\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Vanuatu has a history of cannibalism, like most of the South Pacific islands, so several young men offer photo opportunities for tourists.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9432.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9432.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9432\" width=\"399\" height=\"305\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9439.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9439.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9439\" width=\"315\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mystery Island can be described as a jewel of the South Pacific Islands. \u00a0We had a wonderful time swimming in the crystal clear water and relaxing on the pristine beach.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block;
