{"id":14921,"date":"2018-12-14T22:24:18","date_gmt":"2018-12-15T03:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14921"},"modified":"2018-12-24T22:25:27","modified_gmt":"2018-12-25T03:25:27","slug":"honolulu-oahu-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14921","title":{"rendered":"Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday &#8211; December 14, 2018 \u00a0 Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii<\/p>\n<p>Our Cruise Director, Jorge, announced that the forward deck would be open as the ship cruised into Honolulu Harbor allowing passengers to see the sunrise over Diamond Head. \u00a0So we set our alarms for 5:30 and were out on the bow by 6:30. \u00a0Unfortunately, the Amsterdam had crept into the harbor in darkness and was tied up at the dock by the time we got there. \u00a0While we waited for the sun, we looked out at the midnight-blue sky and the city lights.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4671.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4671.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4671\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We watched the stars gradually dim and the sky brightened:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4679.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4679.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4679\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4705.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4705.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4705\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4692.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4692.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4692\" width=\"400\" height=\"243\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we began this Pacific adventure in September, our first port of call was Honolulu. \u00a0We had walked around and explored the city and Waikiki Beach. \u00a0Now that we were back in Honolulu, we wanted to see more of the island of Oahu so we went on an excursion that took us out of the city and drove around the island. \u00a0The first stop was Byodo-in Temple:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4717.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4717.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4717\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Visitors are invited to ring the Sacred Bell before entering the temple. \u00a0\u201cThe unique tones of the bell clears the mind of negativity, imparts deep peace and brings happiness, blessings and a long life.\u201d \u00a0We took turns ringing the bell.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4722.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4722.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4722\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Byodo-In Temple is a replica of a thousand year old Japanese temple. \u00a0This one was built in 1968 to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. Byodo-In Temple houses the Amida statue &#8211; the Buddha of Western Paradise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4730.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4730.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4730\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the temple, we drove to a shop to taste Kona coffee and macadamia nuts:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4760.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4760.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4760\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the way to lunch, we passed several beaches and gorgeous lookouts. \u00a0Kualoa Park:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4783.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4783.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4783\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sunset Beach: surfing finals are held here:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4793.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4793.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4793\" width=\"400\" height=\"247\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4801.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4801.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4801\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4803.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4803.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4803\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We stopped for lunch at Tsue\u2019s Farm in Haleiwa. They also rent kayaks and paddle boards by the hour.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9969.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9969.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9969\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had delicious fresh \u201cgarlic &amp; butter shrimp with white rice.\u201d \u00a0The shrimp were cooked to perfection BUT not peeled! \u00a0So it was a sticky messy hands-on operation! \u00a0But DELICIOUS!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4821.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4821.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4821\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We ate outdoors at picnic tables and fortunately Tsue\u2019s provided outdoor sinks to wash our hands after a messy lunch. \u00a0Then we had \u201cShave Ice\u201d for lunch. \u00a0I love the Christmas decorations and snow flakes on the Shave Ice stand!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9965.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9965.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9965\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I missed having Shave Ice the last time we were in Hawaii, so this was a real treat!! \u00a0I had coconut, pineapple, &amp; root beer flavors on shave ice. \u00a0Dee-lish! \u00a0Jeff had coconut, pineapple &amp; lime. \u00a0 I highly recommend Shave Ice. \u00a0Very refreshing on a hot day.<\/p>\n<p>Our last stop was the Dole Pineapple Plantation which is really a tourist shop than sells pineapple souvenirs and pineapple ice cream. \u00a0The major pineapple growers moved to Thailand several years ago because of cheaper labor costs. \u00a0There are very few pineapple fields left in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9983.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9983.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9983\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9988.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9988.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9988\" width=\"259\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our driver\/guide Keith drove us back to Honolulu some time in the afternoon. \u00a0We had a very pleasant time seeing the island of Oahu. \u00a0The Amsterdam was scheduled to stay in port until 11:00 tonight, so we had plenty of time to enjoy Honolulu. \u00a0We took a taxi to Waikiki Beach to watch the sunset and have dinner.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_9994.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_9994.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 9994\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People were still swimming in calm waters and one young man practiced surfing on small waves.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_0002.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_0002.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 0002\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We walked out to the end of a concrete jetty to look around. \u00a0Diamond Head is an extinct volcano and provides a good background for photos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_0005.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_0005.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 0005\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had dinner in a Tiki bar\/restaurant which our taxi driver recommended, overlooking the beach.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_0012.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_0012.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 0012\" width=\"400\" height=\"307\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later back on the ship, we saw a performance of Hawaiian singers and dancers. \u00a0Great Fun!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block;
