{"id":14942,"date":"2018-12-15T22:27:30","date_gmt":"2018-12-16T03:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14942"},"modified":"2018-12-24T22:37:21","modified_gmt":"2018-12-25T03:37:21","slug":"lahaina-maui-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/?p=14942","title":{"rendered":"Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>December 15, 2018<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_0089.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_0089.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 0089\" width=\"400\" height=\"123\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ship anchored in the bay off the Hawaiian island of Maui near the village of Lahaina. \u00a0We heard that ships couldn&#8217;t always stop here because cross-winds frequently make anchoring difficult and tenders have a hard time getting people ashore. \u00a0I guess we were lucky that the wind wasn\u2019t very strong.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_5013.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_5013.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 5013\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After reading so many good things about the island of Maui, we were looking forward to seeing as much as we could in a few hours. \u00a0We signed up for an excursion called \u201cDiscover Maui\u2019s Hidden Treasures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4856.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4856.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4856\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were a small group of a dozen people in a passenger van. \u00a0We drove up the coast and passed beautiful beaches along the shore. \u00a0Our first stop was a town called Makawao which was known as a farming and ranching community. \u00a0There were successful sugar cane and pineapple plantations in the region for decades.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4873.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4873.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4873\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We stopped at a tiny museum which displayed a few historical artifacts. \u00a0Today, Makawao was a town of high-end boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. \u00a0We crossed the street to see a glassblower at work and his beautiful creations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4884.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4884.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4884\" width=\"280\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maui lived up to its reputation as a very beautiful island. It looked like a wonderful place to live, but real estate is very expensive. \u00a0We had a picnic lunch on the grounds of the former Baldwin estate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4906.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4906.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4906\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4902.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4902.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4902\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>O\u2019okipa, which means \u2018hospitality\u2019 in Hawaiian, was another gorgeous beach with huge rolling surf.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4916.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4916.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4916\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4920.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4920.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4920\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4913.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4913.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4913\" width=\"400\" height=\"212\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We visited a state park that paid tribute to the immigrant groups that originally settled in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4947.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4947.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4947\" width=\"400\" height=\"256\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our last stop was Kumu Farms that grew a huge variety of produce, including sweet Maui golden pineapples:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4963.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4963.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4963\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4968.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4968.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4968\" width=\"400\" height=\"256\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We returned to Lahaina early enough to walk around town. \u00a0The tree in the photo below is a huge Indian Banyan tree. \u00a0It covered the entire space behind the Lahaina museum.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4977.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4977.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4977\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lahaina was a tourist town with souvenir shops, restaurants, bars, jewelry stores, and an outlet mall. \u00a0There were a few historical buildings:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"DSC_4997.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/DSC_4997.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 4997\" width=\"400\" height=\"308\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block;
