src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last night\u00a0<em>The Mojito\u00a0<\/em>docked on the west bank of the Nile River near the city of Eduf, Egypt and this morning we awoke to a brilliant, crisp, clear sunny day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15163\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We climbed up the stairs to the riverside corniche. \u00a0There was a clamor of carriage drivers yelling for attention to be chosen to drive our group to the Temple of Horus. \u00a0Two passengers for each weathered horse-drawn carriage; we were assigned to #468.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15164\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15165\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our driver, Ahmed, smiled and helped us into the carriage and we were off in a caravan of American tourists clomping down the main streets of Edfu!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15166\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Edfu is an Egyptian city with a population of about 60,000 people. \u00a0It was fun riding through the village in the carriage although it was so early that many of the shops were closed.<\/p>\n<p>A bakery:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15168\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Spice shop:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15169\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We arrived at the Temple of Horus and Ahmed parked his horse &amp; carriage next to the others.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15170\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15171\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Temple of Horus which was built between 237BC and 57BC, is the second largest temple in Egypt and one of the best preserved ancient monuments. \u00a0Preservation was possible because sand had covered the site and, over many centuries, houses had been built on top of the temple.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15173\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6258.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15174\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6257.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15175\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The huge pylons that stand at the entrance to the temple were decorated with battle scenes of King Ptolemy VIII during the Greco-Roman period in Egyptian history.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15180\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The temple was dedicated to the falcon god Horus. \u00a0Ancient Egyptians believed the temple was built on the site of the mythical battle between Horus and Seth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15181\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6291.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15182\" Temple. \u00a0We climbed into the carriage and enjoyed another fun ride through Edfu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15187\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6378.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Edfu was now bustling with people, cars, wagons, and tiny three-wheeled jitneys. \u00a0It was market day. \u00a0Shops were open and vendors were everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15188\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6389.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15189\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6392.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards we enjoyed lunch onboard <em>The Mojito<\/em>, while the crew let go its lines from the dock and brought them aboard. \u00a0We cast off and the riverboat followed the channel markers in the Nile and we continued cruising southward.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15200\" size-full wp-image-15201\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6445.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"217\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We sat out on the top deck, chatted with our fellow travelers, and watched the beautiful Nile riverbank pass us by.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15196\" the chefs appeared on the top deck and gave us a cooking demonstration of how to make <em>babaganoush &#8211; <\/em>a delicious Middle-Eastern dish made from eggplants:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15209\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6487.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The head chef demonstrated how to carve a large gourd for display:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15210\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6495.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Time passed quickly and we arrived at the village of Kom Ombo, thirty miles north of Aswan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15211\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6510.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a photo of <em>The Mojito<\/em> docking in front ashore. \u00a0We planned to return to visit the Temple of Kom Ombo in a few days on our way back up the Nile. \u00a0<em>The Mojito<\/em> at its dock:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15213\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6534.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had an hour to go ashore to explore on our own. \u00a0A bridal couple posed for photographs in front of the temple:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15214\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6525.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Local kids gathered around the couple and a loud percussion band played music as family members gathered at a restaurant below the temple. \u00a0It was a lively scene!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15215\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_6530.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We explored the market which had been set up along the riverside. \u00a0We both bought <em>galabiyas<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; the traditional Egyptian garment native to the Nile Valley &#8211; for our upcoming &#8220;Galabiya Party&#8221; on the
