The Huna Totem Corporation, a group of about 1400 Alaskan Natives, purchased the property in 1996. The site was developed and opened to cruise ships in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15754\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_9232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A 1930s cannery was restored and converted into a museum, restaurant, and shops. I read that the cruise ship business accounted for more than half the local economy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15755\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_9150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The main town of Hoonah is a short bus ride away from the tourist area. It&#8217;s mostly a Tlingit community of \u00a0about 800 people. &#8220;Hoonah&#8221; is the adopted spelling of\u00a0<em>Xunaa <\/em>which\u00a0means &#8220;protected from the North wind&#8221; in the Tlingit language.<\/p>\n<p>We walked around town and took photos. There were several very interesting totem poles, especially those at the Hoonah Indian Association tribal office:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15757\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_9167.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15758\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_9202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15759\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_2966.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15760\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_9201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Where else can you visit the&#8221;coolest rope shop in Alaska&#8221; and have a free IQ test?!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15761\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_2962.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15762\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_9185.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On our way out of Hoonah, we spotted a bald eagle high in a tree in the center of a residential neighborhood:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15763\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_9214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fishing and tourism are the main sources of income for the locals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15764\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_9223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We returned to the ship and watched as it left the dock. Another large cruise ship was behind us and moved in to visit Icy Strait Point.
