We arrived early in the morning and checked into the very modern Maximilian Hotel. We chose the hotel because it was located in the historic district of the capital city and was within walking distance to most tourist sights.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16261\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"290\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Prague, Czech Republic is a beautiful historic city with lovely decorated buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and charming tiled sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16313\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/07\/IMG_1100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"307\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Old Town Square (<em>Staromestske Namesti<\/em>) is the oldest and most significant square in the historical center of Prague. Its history dates to the 10th century when it was a major marketplace.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16275\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Overlooking the Old Town Square are the tall spires of the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, which was completed in the 15th century. The red-roof building on the left in the photo below is the National Gallery, home to a large European art collection.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16263\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16305\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/07\/IMG_1125.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The huge Jan Hus Memorial stands in the Old Town Square. It was dedicated in 1915 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Jan Hus&#8217; martyrdom. Hus was a 14th century Czech theologian and church reformer who was executed for heresy against the Catholic Church in 1415.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16265\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1127.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Prague&#8217;s Jewish Quarter (<em>Josefov<\/em>) survives after centuries of discrimination and cruelty to the thousands of people who were forced to live in the squalid conditions of a &#8220;Ghetto.&#8221; Fortunately, several significant historical buildings were saved from destruction and are a testimony to the history and resiliency of the Jewish people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16264\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1104.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maisel Synagogue, built in 1590, is part of the Jewish Museum in Prague. A permanent exhibit tells the story of the &#8220;Jews in Bohemia: 10th-18th centuries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16266\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Ceremonial Hall of the Prague Jewish Burial Society:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16269\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Old Jewish Cemetery:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16268\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1165.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lovely quaint street in Prague:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16298\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1284.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>View of the magnificent Charles Bridge &#8211; <em>Karluv Most<\/em> &#8211; built in 1357 which crosses the River Vltava:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16297\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1305.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Prague Castle was once the home of Bohemia&#8217;s kings and today is the residence of the Czech Republic&#8217;s president. Originally built as a walled fortress in 870AD, it is the largest castle complex in the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16270\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>St. Vitus Cathedral (constructed in 1344) is located within the the castle walls and is an interesting place to visit:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16271\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16272\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16273\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The statue of two male figures was public art created by David Cerny, placed located outside the Franz Kafka Museum:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16299\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1298.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16300\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1508.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16301\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1347.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16274\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1126.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16267\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We walked everywhere and rode the modern Metro system and also the efficient trams.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16276\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"313\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>St. Nicholas Church is a prime example of Baroque architecture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16277\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1269.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16291\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1513.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Lennon Wall was started in 1980 as a tribute to the former Beatle but became a symbol of hope and peace for the local people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16278\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1289.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16279\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1288.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16302\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wenceslas Square is the highlight of Prague&#8217;s New Town &#8211; <em>N<\/em><i>ove\u00a0Mesto &#8211; <\/i>named after the patron saint of Bohemia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16280\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1334.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16281\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1336.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"322\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16282\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1343.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16290\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1315.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16283\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1344.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Municipal House &#8211;\u00a0<em>Obecni dum<\/em> &#8211; is considered one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau in the city:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16284\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1361.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The brightly painted houses of Golden Lane date from the late 1500s and was named for the goldsmiths who once lived there:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16308\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/07\/IMG_1260.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"359\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16285\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1373.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16286\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1365.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The National Technical Museum, founded in 1908 has exhibits that demonstrate everything from architecture to astronomy:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16287\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1376.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16288\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16289\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1346.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16292\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1327.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Zizkov Television Tower, just outside the historic center of Prague, is a modern landmark with breathtaking views of the city. Ten fiberglass sculptures by Czech artist David Cerny called <em>Miminka <\/em>(Babies) adorn the tower:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16293\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16294\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_1421.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We spent a wonderful week in beautiful historic Prague.
