We drove to the center of Lhasa and walked slowly around the bustling city. Potala Palace, the former home of the Dalai Lama, was built on Mount Marpori in the city center and dominates Lhasa.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16550\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3463.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The city lies in the center of a flat river valley surrounded by mountains which rise to elevations of 18,000 feet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16551\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3479.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lhasa has been the religious and administrative capital of Tibet since the mid-17th century. The name translates as &#8220;place of gods&#8221; in the Tibetan language. The Communist Chinese of the People&#8217;s Republic of China invaded the country in 1950. After a massive crackdown by the Chinese government in 1959, the Dalai Lama fled into exile. He currently lives in India.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16552\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3480.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16553\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3492.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"298\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The weather in August was cool and crisp with bright sunlight. The monastery is a complex of structures founded in 1419 by a famous teacher of Tibetan Buddhism and had developed into a renowned place of learning. Sera means &#8220;wild roses&#8221; which grew at one time on the hills behind the monastery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16564\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3523.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16563\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3556.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"313\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16565\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3531.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Debate has become part of the culture of Buddhist belief and is an essential part of the teaching on the path to enlightenment. \u00a0Debates were introduced to Tibetan Buddhism during the 7th century and monks in universities spend years studying the art of debate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16566\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3536.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16567\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3538.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16568\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3541.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"369\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tourists are welcome to quietly watch the debates which are held in an outdoor courtyard.
