The highway was a two-lane paved road in the valley, passing along tall mountains. Farmers moved a herd of cows off the road below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16605\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3829.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"305\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The driver of our van had to obtain a pass from the Chinese government to drive on the highway. He had to tell the authorities who was in the van and where we were going.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16606\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3832.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Drivers have to maintain the speed limit and arrive at a designated place at the right time and check in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16617\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3896.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yak grazed at the side of the road:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16607\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3835.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"305\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16608\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3839.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We arrived at the natural hot spring and found major construction. We walked past the worksite to an indoor pool where people were enjoying a warm soak.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16609\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3847.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>No, we did not us the roadside facilities:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16615\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3892.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, we stopped at a small village nearby:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16610\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3879.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The driver parked the van. Then he and our guide left and crossed the street to join a group of people circled around a freshly slaughtered yak.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16612\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3885.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16611\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3881.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16613\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3882.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They chatted for a while; negotiated a price and quantity. Then the butcher weighed the meat on a primitive scale and put the meat in a plastic bag.
