The church was constructed on the site where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in 1881:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16737\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6698.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"321\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16739\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6714.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16740\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Monument to Catherine the Great was finished in 1873. Her reign was known as the &#8220;golden age&#8221; of Russia, and she was adored by the people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16741\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6097.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We rode across the bridge to The Peter &amp; Paul Fortress which was the original fortification of St. Petersburg built in 1703 by Peter the Great.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16742\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6751.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fortress served as a prison in the 18th century but was converted to a museum in 1924. Part of the complex includes Peter and Paul Cathedral which was the burial place of most of the Russian tzars.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16744\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6788.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16743\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6767.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"273\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16745\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6760.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The remains of Czar Nicholas II and his family were re-interred in the cathedral in 1998, the 80th anniversary of their deaths. Nicholas was the last Russian Emperor. He and his family were executed in 1918.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16746\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6779.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We explored the fortress and took pictures of the sandy beach below the fortification walls.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16748\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6818.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"226\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16749\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of two Rostral Columns on the end of Vasilyevsky Island which were constructed in 1810 to mark where the Neva River splits into two channels.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16747\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6159.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16750\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6830.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"228\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16751\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6730.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16752\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6738.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beautiful architecture in St. Petersburg includes the 1877 Ciniselli Circus:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16753\" src=\"https:\/\/gallivantinggrandma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/DSC_6744.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had a great time in St. Petersburg.
